How to Replace an RV Water Pump (12V, Self-Priming)

A failing RV water pump that won't prime, runs constantly, or pulses hard is usually quicker to replace than repair. Most RV fresh-water pumps are 12V self-priming diaphragm pumps with standard ½" plumbing fittings, so the swap is: cut power and water, disconnect the lines, unbolt the old pump, mount and plumb the new one, then prime. Signs your water pump needs replacing

  • Won't prime or won't build pressure
  • Runs constantly / won't shut off (or cycles rapidly at the tap)
  • Leaks from the pump head, or is noisy and weak

Rapid cycling can sometimes be an accumulator or a leak rather than the pump — but a pump that won't prime or build pressure is usually done.

Choose a matching pump

What you'll need

  • Replacement 12V self-priming pump — shop water pumps
  • Thread tape/sealant, a screwdriver, and the right fittings (reuse or replace the quick-connects)
  • Optional: an inline strainer and an accumulator tank for smoother flow

Step 1 — Shut down & drain

  1. Turn off the pump at the 12V switch/fuse.
  2. Open a tap to release pressure, and have a towel ready for residual water.

Step 2 — Disconnect the old pump

  1. Disconnect the inlet and outlet plumbing.
  2. Disconnect the 12V positive and negative wires (note which is which).
  3. Unbolt the pump from its mount.

Step 3 — Mount & plumb the new pump

  1. Mount on a solid surface using the pump's rubber feet to reduce noise/vibration.
  2. Fit an inline strainer on the inlet to protect the diaphragm.
  3. Connect inlet and outlet, sealing threaded fittings with tape/sealant.

Step 4 — Wire & prime

  1. Connect 12V positive and negative (match polarity), on its own fused circuit.
  2. With water in the tank, switch on — the pump self-primes; open a tap to purge air until flow is steady.
  3. Check all fittings for leaks; confirm the pump shuts off when taps are closed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • No inline strainer — grit damages the diaphragm and voids the pump fast.
  • Hard-mounting without the rubber feet — transmits noise through the camper.
  • Over-tightening plastic fittings — they crack; snug plus thread tape is enough.
  • Wrong polarity or no fuse — fuse the pump circuit and match + / −.

Why won't my RV water pump prime?

Usually air in the inlet line, a clogged strainer, or a worn pump. Check for inlet leaks and a blocked strainer first; if it still won't prime or build pressure, replace the pump.

What GPM and PSI do I need?
