The cause is almost always the same: the coupling was never greased, or it was greased once at delivery and never again. The fix: Grease the coupling at every service interval — every 5,000 km on-road, and after every serious off-road trip. If play has already developed, most quality couplings have replaceable bushings and wear components. The fix: Inspect shocks at every wheel-off service. A weeping shock is a dead shock — replace in pairs per axle side. If you tow on corrugations regularly, step up to Radflo remote-reservoir shocks. When repacking, always replace the seals, and torque the axle nut to spec rather than the old "tighten and back off a castellation" guess.
4. Chassis and Hardware Corrosion
The hot-dipped galvanized chassis on Black Series campers is genuinely good rust protection — but the bolt-on hardware, suspension fasteners, and anything welded or drilled after galvanizing is not protected the same way. Owners in coastal areas or those who tow on salted winter roads report surface rust on shock bolts, coupling hardware, stone guards, and jack mounts within a couple of seasons.
The fix: Twice a year, get under the trailer with a wire brush and a can of cold-galvanizing spray. Hit any fastener showing surface rust, and replace anything with section loss. Rinse the underside thoroughly after beach towing or salted roads. Where hardware has corroded badly, replace with galvanized or stainless equivalents rather than plain zinc-plated bolts.
Electrical and Power System Problems
5. Batteries That Die Young
The most common electrical complaint from Black Series owners is battery capacity falling off a cliff after a year or two. The root cause is rarely the battery itself — it's chronic undercharging. Factory AGM batteries that live at 60–80% state of charge sulfate quickly, and the basic converters fitted to many units never push the absorption and float profile AGMs need for a full recharge.
The fix: First, get visibility: a battery monitor with a proper shunt tells you actual state of charge instead of a guess from a voltage sticker. Water System Problems
8. Water Pump Cycling, Losing Prime, or Failing
Pump problems present three ways. Rapid on-off cycling when a tap is barely open usually means a failed or waterlogged accumulator, or a pressure switch set too tight. Losing prime after sitting means air is getting in on the suction side — typically a cracked fitting or perished O-ring between tank and pump. And outright failure is commonly a pump that was run dry or frozen with water in the head.
The fix: For cycling, add or recharge an accumulator tank and back off the pressure switch slightly. For prime loss, pressure-test the suction line and replace suspect fittings — thread tape on tapered threads, new O-rings on the strainer bowl. Always fit an inline strainer before the pump; a $15 strainer protects a $150 pump from tank debris. And if you camp in freezing conditions, blow the lines down before storage.
9. Tank and Plumbing Leaks
Poly water tanks on off-road trailers live a hard life — they flex with the chassis, get sandblasted by wheel spray, and take the occasional rock strike. Owners report leaks at the tank fittings more often than the tank body: the plastic threaded outlets loosen as the tank flexes, and the joint starts weeping. Interior plumbing leaks under the sink or behind the shower wall often go unnoticed until you spot swollen cabinetry.
The fix: Every few months, crawl under with the tanks full and look for drips and wet dust trails at every fitting. Re-seat weeping fittings with fresh thread sealant rated for potable water. Check that tank guards and straps are tight — movement is what kills fittings. Inside, run the pump, pressurize the system, and put your hand on every accessible joint. Catching a weep early is a five-minute fix; catching it late means rebuilding a cabinet floor.
Appliance and Climate Control Problems
10. Compressor Fridge Not Cold Enough
A 12V compressor fridge that won't hold temperature in summer heat is nearly always an installation or power problem, not a fridge problem. The compressor needs adequate ventilation to dump heat — Black Series fridge cavities are often tight, and blocked or absent vent paths make the compressor run constantly without ever pulling the cabinet down. Low supply voltage does the same thing: many fridges derate or cut out below about 10.5V at the fridge terminals, and a long thin supply run can drop a full volt under compressor load.
The fix: Check voltage at the fridge terminals with the compressor running — if it's more than 0.3–0.4V below battery voltage, rewire the supply run in heavier gauge with its own fused circuit. Clear the ventilation path (in at the bottom, out at the top or via a fan), and add a small computer-style fan on the condenser if the cavity is sealed. The fix: For dust, replace flattened door seals (if the seal doesn't leave a witness mark on chalk applied to the frame, it isn't sealing), and pressurize the cabin on dirt roads by opening a roof hatch scoop slightly. For water, re-seal aging penetrations with a quality non-acetic sealant after cutting out the old bead — don't just smear more on top.
