Independent trailing-arm suspension is the reason these campers tow the way they do off pavement. It is also a wear system. Corrugations load a trailer's suspension far harder than highway miles do, and the parts that take that punishment are consumables on a long enough timeline.
This guide covers what fails first, how to tell which suspension generation you have before you order anything, and what a full refresh actually costs in parts.
Identify your generation before you order
This is the step that decides whether the parts fit. Black Series changed the HQ suspension geometry, and the current 12/10-inch arms do not fit earlier campers.
- 2022 model year and newer use the 12/10-inch configuration, which gives more ground clearance and articulation than the earlier specification.
- Pre-2022 campers use the earlier geometry. The 12/10-inch arms will not fit them, and this is not a swap you can force.
Shocks, springs and bushings are far more forgiving across model years than arms are. Arms are the part where the year matters most, so confirm your build year before ordering one.
If you do not know your camper's build year with confidence, check the compliance plate rather than going by when you bought it. Campers sit on lots, and purchase year and build year often differ.
What wears, roughly in order
Bushings, first and most often
Bushings sit between the suspension arm and the chassis and absorb everything the track sends through the wheel. They are the part that does the most work and the part that goes first.
Symptoms: a clunk over bumps or when the trailer shifts direction, visible play at the arm pivot, and uneven tire wear that no alignment explains. A trailer that has developed a vague, wandering feel behind the tow vehicle is often telling you about bushings.
The suspension bushing range covers this in pieces or as a set:

Replace the hardware with the bushings. Bolts that have been cycling under load for years in a wet, gritty environment are not worth reusing to save twenty dollars, and a stretched bolt in a suspension pivot is not a place to economize.
Shocks, on a slower clock
Shocks fade rather than fail outright, which is why they get left too long. A camper that has started to feel floaty, that keeps oscillating after a dip, or that skips sideways across corrugations instead of tracking through them is asking for shocks.
Symptoms: oil weeping down the shock body, a bouncing or wallowing trailer, cupped tire wear, and a trailer that feels busy behind the tow vehicle on rough surfaces.
Two options, and they suit different owners:
- Genuine Black Series off-road shocks, gas-charged monotube, sold as a pair, powder-coated red to match the factory system. This is the same specification fitted in production, so it is the straight like-for-like replacement and needs no decisions.
- Radflo shocks with remote reservoir, a bolt-in upgrade built on race shock technology and custom-valved for these campers. The remote reservoir adds oil volume and separates the gas charge, which is what keeps damping consistent on long, rough descents where a smaller shock heats up and fades. Available with compression adjusters and suited to a range of lift setups.
Always replace shocks in pairs across an axle. A new shock on one side and a tired one on the other gives you a trailer that behaves differently in left and right corners.
Springs, less often but not never
Coil springs sag over years under a camper that is stored loaded, and they can be overwhelmed on a camper carrying more than it was specified for.
Symptoms: ride height sitting low, the trailer looking nose-down or tail-down when level on the ball, bottoming out on impacts it used to absorb, and bump stops showing contact wear.
The hi-performance off-road springs are the factory production specification for HQ Series campers. They use a progressive rate of 130 to 150 N/mm, which stays compliant when the camper is light and stiffens as you load it. That progression is the reason a camper towed both empty and fully laden rides acceptably in both states.
Check your bump stops at the same time. A crushed or missing bump stop means metal-to-metal contact on hard impacts, and it is a fifteen-dollar part protecting several hundred dollars of spring and arm.
Hardware, every time you are in there
U-bolts stretch. Bolts corrode. Bushing sleeves wear oval.
The complete suspension accessory parts set is the genuine OEM hardware kit: bolts, nuts, bushings and clips for a full service or rebuild, supplied together so you are not stopped mid-job by a missing fastener. Individual U-bolts are available separately for a stretched or corroded one.
A stretched U-bolt is a structural fault, not a cosmetic one. If one looks tired, replace it.
Air suspension, if you are rethinking the whole system
The factory air suspension system is a different proposition from replacing worn parts. Air springs absorb corrugations that punish a loaded trailer, let you raise or lower each side to level the camper on uneven ground without ramps and blocks, and keep the trailer more composed under load.
It is a significant investment and it makes most sense as a considered upgrade rather than a repair. If your current suspension needs a full refresh anyway, it is worth pricing both paths before committing to either.
Practical notes for the job
- Support the trailer properly. Chassis stands under rated points, chocks on the wheels that stay down, and never any part of you under a trailer held up by a jack.
- Work one side at a time where you can, so the other side stays as a reference for how everything goes back.
- Photograph the assembly before dismantling. Bushing sleeves, washers and spacers go back in a specific order and the photo settles arguments an hour later.
- Use new hardware, and torque to the figures in your camper's manual. Suspension fasteners are not the place for guesswork or for reused bolts.
- Re-torque after a shakedown run. Do a short loaded loop, then check everything again before a long trip.
- Check the wheel bearings while the hub is accessible. You are already there, and a bearing service costs a fraction of what it costs to do the same access twice.
A realistic refresh list
For a camper that has done serious off-road miles and has never had suspension attention:
- Shocks, as a pair per axle
- Full bushing kit with hardware
- Bump stops
- Suspension hardware set
- Wheel bearings, since the hubs are already off
- Springs, only if ride height has visibly dropped or the camper bottoms out
Items one through four are the routine refresh. Springs and arms are the exception rather than the rule, and arms in particular are a repair for damage rather than a wear item.
