If you run an off-grid camper, a battery monitor is the single most useful upgrade you can make. It's the difference between guessing how much power you have left and knowing it to the amp-hour. Victron makes two monitors that show up on almost every shortlist: the BMV-712 Smart and the SmartShunt. They share the same brain and report the same core data — so which one belongs in your rig?

What both monitors actually do

Both the BMV-712 and the SmartShunt are precision battery monitors built around a shunt — a calibrated bar that every amp flowing in or out of your battery bank must pass through. By measuring that current continuously and combining it with battery voltage, the monitor calculates the numbers that matter most when you're off-grid:

  • State of charge (%) — a true fuel gauge for your battery, far more accurate than voltage alone.
  • Time to go — an estimate of how long your bank will last at the current draw.
  • Voltage, current, and power — live readings of what's coming in and going out.
  • Consumed amp-hours, charge cycles, and deepest discharge — history that helps you care for lithium or AGM batteries over the long haul.

Both connect over Bluetooth to the free VictronConnect app, both have a VE.Direct port for tying into a Victron GX system monitor (like a Cerbo GX), and both include an auxiliary input so you can also watch a starter battery, monitor midpoint voltage, or add a temperature sensor. In other words, for the headline job — knowing your true state of charge — they are functionally identical.

The core difference: a display, or app-only?

The biggest distinction is simple. The BMV-712 Smart includes a round, dash-mountable display head that shows your battery status at a glance, with Bluetooth built in on top. The SmartShunt has no display at all — it's an all-in-one shunt that you read entirely through the VictronConnect app on your phone or tablet.

That one design choice drives almost every other difference between them.

BMV-712 Smart — the always-on gauge

Because the BMV-712 Smart has a physical display, you get a permanent, glanceable readout mounted somewhere convenient — no phone required. It also adds two features the SmartShunt lacks:

  • A programmable audible and visual alarm that warns you when the battery drops too low, right there in the cabin.
  • A programmable relay you can wire to trigger an action automatically — for example, shedding a load or signaling a generator when the bank hits a set level.

The trade-off: it needs a panel cutout and a thin data cable run from the shunt to the display head.

SmartShunt — the clean, hidden install

The SmartShunt packs everything into the shunt itself. There's no head unit to mount and no display cable to route, so installs are quick and tidy — ideal when you'd rather not drill another hole in a finished interior. You read everything in the app. The trade-offs are that there's no buzzer or onboard alarm (notifications are app-based), no relay output, and you'll have your phone out to check status. Which shunt rating do you need?

The SmartShunt's standard model is rated 500A/50mV, and Victron offers higher-capacity versions (up to 2000A) for large systems. For the vast majority of RV, van, and off-grid camper builds — even those with a sizable inverter — the 500A rating is plenty. Add up the maximum current your inverter and chargers could pull at once; as long as that peak sits comfortably under the shunt's rating, you're good. Only very large battery banks or high-output inverter setups need to size up.

How to choose

Choose the BMV-712 Smart if you want a dedicated gauge you can read without your phone, you want an audible low-battery alarm in the cabin, or you need a relay to automate something. It's the classic choice for owners who like a physical dashboard.

Choose the SmartShunt if you're comfortable checking status in the VictronConnect app, you want the simplest, cleanest install with nothing extra to mount, or you already run a Cerbo GX or other display that will show the data anyway. It's the favorite for minimalist van and camper builds.

Either way, you're getting the same trusted Victron accuracy — the decision really comes down to whether you want a screen on the wall or in your pocket.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SmartShunt or BMV-712 more accurate?

Neither — they use the same shunt-based measurement and report identical state-of-charge accuracy. The differences are about how you read the data (built-in display vs. app) and the BMV-712's added alarm and relay, not measurement precision.

Do I still need a display if I have a Cerbo GX?

No. If you run a Cerbo GX or similar Victron GX device, it already shows your battery data on its own screen and in the VRM app, so the SmartShunt pairs perfectly — you avoid paying for a second display you don't need.

Can these monitors track a second (starter) battery?

Yes. Both have an auxiliary input that can monitor a second battery's voltage, watch midpoint voltage on a series bank, or read a temperature sensor — handy for keeping an eye on a starter battery alongside your house bank.
