Black Series Common Problems: 12 Issues and How to Fix Them

Every Black Series owner eventually has the same conversation at the campsite: someone's fridge isn't cooling, someone's water pump has gone silent, and someone's annex zip has jammed for the third trip in a row. 1. Battery drains flat within a few days of storage

This is the single most common complaint. The stock battery management and monitoring on most HQ models doesn't give you a clear picture of what's actually drawing power when the camper is sitting idle — fridge left in 12V mode, interior lights left on a parasitic draw, or a poorly isolated DC circuit slowly bleeding the battery down. Owners often don't notice until they arrive at a campsite with a dead battery and no idea why.

The fix: Install a proper battery monitor that tracks state of charge and current draw in real time rather than guessing from voltage alone. 3. LED lights flickering or failing, especially at the rear

Corrugated roads shake wiring connectors loose over time, and the rear of the trailer — tail lights, number plate light, indicators — cops the worst of the vibration and road spray. Corrosion at the connector pins is the usual culprit, not the LED itself.

The fix: Pull the connector, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, and repack with dielectric grease before reconnecting. If corrosion has gotten into the wire itself (green or white crust visible under the insulation), cut back to clean copper and re-crimp with a heat-shrink connector rather than a bare crimp. Water System and Plumbing Problems

Water systems fail quietly until they don't — usually at the worst possible moment, three days into a trip with no phone signal.

4. Water pump loses prime or runs dry

If your pump cycles on and off rapidly, or runs continuously without delivering water, it's usually lost prime — air has gotten into the line, either from a near-empty tank being sloshed around on rough tracks, or from a loose fitting letting air in upstream of the pump.

The fix: Check the tank level first (an embarrassingly common cause), then inspect every fitting between the tank and the pump for a loose hose clamp or degraded O-ring. Prime the pump manually by running water backward through the outlet line if you have access, or disconnect and refill the inlet line directly. Carry spare hose clamps and a small tube of plumber's silicone in your spares kit — this is a five-minute roadside fix if you're prepared and a ruined trip if you're not.

5. Grey or black water level sensors read incorrectly

Capacitive and probe-style tank sensors get coated in residue over time — grease from dishwater, soap scum, anything that clings to the inside of the tank — which throws off the reading. It's common for a tank to show "full" when it's actually empty, or vice versa.

The fix: Empty and flush the tank thoroughly with clean water and a tank cleaning solution, then run the sensor calibration if your monitor panel supports it. For chronically inaccurate sensors, a tank rinse system that sprays the tank walls after each dump prevents residue buildup in the first place and is worth retrofitting if you don't already have one.

6. Hot water system won't ignite or cuts out

Gas hot water units are sensitive to air in the gas line (common after a bottle swap), a dirty flame sensor, or wind gusting across the flue and blowing the pilot out. This is more of an annoyance than a serious fault in most cases.

The fix: Purge air from the line by holding the ignition button slightly longer than instinct tells you to after any gas bottle change. If it still won't light, check that the flue isn't obstructed by dust or a spider's nest — a surprisingly frequent cause after storage — and clean the flame sensor with fine sandpaper if it's visibly discolored.

Suspension, Coupling, and Towing Problems

This is where the true cost of corrugated roads and rough tracks shows up. It's also where the biggest performance gains are available if you're willing to spend on upgrades.

7. Shocks feel harsh, blown, or leaking oil

Standard twin-tube shocks on entry-level HQ models are adequate for gravel roads but get overwhelmed on sustained corrugations or rocky 4WD tracks — they heat up, the oil aerates, and damping performance falls off a cliff exactly when you need it most. Visible oil weeping down the shock body is a sign the seals have failed and the unit needs replacing, not just topping up.

The fix: Upgrade to Radflo remote reservoir shocks. The external reservoir separates the oil and gas, which keeps the shock running cooler under sustained hard use and dramatically reduces fade on long corrugated sections. 8. Coupling develops play or won't lock properly

Off-road couplings take a beating from articulation over rough terrain, and bushings wear out faster than most owners expect — usually showing up as a clunk over speed bumps or a loose, sloppy feel when reversing. A coupling that won't latch cleanly is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one, and shouldn't be towed on until fixed.

The fix: Inspect the coupling bushings and pivot points for wear at every service interval, not just when you notice a problem. If you're still running a basic ball coupling and doing serious off-road towing, upgrading to a Cruisemaster DO35 or DO45 off-road coupling gives you far more articulation and a more durable pivot design than a standard ball hitch, which matters a lot once you're off blacktop. The fix: Grease the jockey wheel and corner steady threads every few months, more often if you're camping near the coast where salt air accelerates corrosion. 10. Fridge not cooling properly, especially off-level

Absorption-style fridges (common on older or entry-level setups) are notoriously sensitive to being off-level — even a few degrees of tilt disrupts the cooling cycle and the fridge simply stops working effectively. Compressor fridges don't have this limitation, but poor ventilation around the compressor and condenser can still cause them to underperform in hot weather.

The fix: If you're still running an absorption fridge, leveling the camper properly before setting up camp isn't optional — it's the difference between cold food and spoiled food. Rooftop AC units draw a serious amount of current on startup, and older camper electrical setups or an undersized generator can struggle with that surge, tripping breakers or failing to start at all. Separately, a unit that runs but doesn't cool effectively is usually low on airflow from a blocked or dirty filter.

The fix: Clean the AC filter every few trips — it's a two-minute job that's easy to forget and is responsible for a large share of "my AC isn't cooling" complaints. 12. Door, window, and annex seals leaking or perishing

Once a seal has hardened and cracked, it stops sealing properly and you'll notice dust ingress on corrugated roads or water leaks in heavy rain.

The fix: Inspect door, window, and annex seals every few months for hardening, cracking, or gaps where they meet the frame. Wipe them down with a UV-protectant rubber conditioner regularly — it's cheap insurance that meaningfully extends seal life. Once a seal has actually perished, replace it outright rather than patching it; a compromised seal on a dusty road will let fine dust into everything inside the camper within a single trip.

Preventive Maintenance: Stopping These Problems Before They Start

Most of the twelve issues above have a common thread: they're either caused by neglected routine maintenance or by stock components that weren't specced for serious off-road use. A basic pre-trip and post-trip checklist catches the majority of these before they become trip-ending problems:

  • Before every trip: Check battery state of charge and test the water pump, top up water and check tank sensor accuracy, inspect tyre pressure and wheel bearings, and check the coupling for play.
  • After every trip: Rinse grey/black tanks, wipe down and inspect door/window/annex seals, grease jockey wheel and corner steady threads, and check shock absorbers for oil weeping.
  • Every 6–12 months: Full electrical system check with a battery monitor, inspect and re-grease coupling bushings, service wheel bearings, and check gas lines and connections for the hot water system and cooktop.
