The Black Series HQ22T sits at the top of the HQ lineup — bigger, heavier, and more expensive than the HQ19 and HQ21. It's built for families or couples who want to travel for months at a time with no compromises on living space or off-grid capability.
What the HQ22T Is
The HQ22T is a 22-foot tandem-axle camper. The "T" denotes the tandem axle setup — two axles instead of one. At roughly 28–30 feet overall, it's the largest production model Black Series makes.
Tandem axles provide better weight distribution, improved stability at highway speeds, better braking distribution, and a "get home" capability if one tire fails.
Layout: What's Different From the HQ19
Bedroom: A full queen or king-sized island bed is standard. You can walk around both sides — a significant practical upgrade over a corner bed.
Bathroom: Full-length bathroom with cassette toilet, vanity with mirror cabinet, and a shower an average-height adult can stand in without hunching.
Kitchen: Full-size benchtop, four-burner cooktop, larger fridge recess (60L+ / ~16 gal+ standard, 90L / ~24 gal optional), and proper preparation space.
Garage: Tall enough for a folded camp chair, wide enough for a generator, with a rear drop door that also serves as a loading ramp.
Off-Road Capability
Same hot-dip galvanised chassis as the rest of the HQ Series. The tandem axle configuration makes the HQ22T track more predictably on corrugated roads than a single-axle RV of the same weight.
The length is the limiting factor. At 28–30 feet overall, tight switchbacks become genuine manoeuvring challenges. The HQ22T is the RV for long-distance outback touring where the tracks are wide but remote — not technical rock-crawling.
Power System
Standard spec includes 2× 200W solar and 2× 100Ah AGM batteries — the same as the smaller HQ models. This is inadequate for a fully-equipped HQ22T. Most buyers add more solar and larger battery capacity.
Typical upgrade: 4× 200W solar, 2× 100Ah LiFePO4, Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/45, Victron BMV-712 battery monitor. This adds to the upfront cost but enables 5–7+ days off-grid without a generator.
HQ22T vs HQ19: Is the Step Up Worth It?
| HQ19 | HQ22T | |
|---|---|---|
| Body length | 19 ft | 22 ft |
| ATM (loaded weight) | ~3,500–3,800 kg (~7,715–8,380 lb) | ~4,200–4,500 kg (~9,260–9,920 lb) |
| Bedroom | Rear corner bed | Island queen/king |
| Bathroom | Ensuite (compact) | Full bathroom |
| Axles | Single | Tandem |
| Price | Entry point of the comparison | Carries a significant premium over the HQ19 |
Worth it if: You travel 4+ weeks at a stretch, you're a family, you want the island bed specifically, or you're replacing a motorhome.
Not worth the premium if: You travel 2–3 weeks maximum, your tow vehicle isn't rated for 4,500+ kg (~9,920+ lb) ATM, or you do technical 4WD tracks.
Verdict
The HQ22T is the best production camper Black Series makes. The island bed, real bathroom, and proper kitchen are genuine improvements — not incremental upgrades. If you intend to spend real time in the RV and your tow vehicle can handle the weight, the step up is justifiable.
