Lithium vs AGM RV Batteries: What You Actually Get for the Money

AGM batteries still dominate RV dealer lots because their sticker price is lower. But sticker price per amp-hour is the wrong math — here's the comparison that actually matters.

Usable capacity: the 50% rule

Lead-acid chemistry (including AGM) ages rapidly when discharged below about 50%. A "100Ah" AGM is really a 50Ah battery in daily use. LiFePO4 tolerates 80–100% discharge, so a 100Ah lithium delivers roughly double the usable energy of a 100Ah AGM — and a 280Ah lithium delivers what would take five to six 100Ah AGMs to match sustainably.

Cycle life: the real cost divider

AGM batteries in RV service typically deliver a few hundred deep cycles — 3–5 seasons for a regular boondocker. One requirement: your converter or charger must have a LiFePO4 profile (14.4–14.6V). Older lead-acid-only converters chronically undercharge lithium.

Where AGM still wins — honestly

  • Engine/starting batteries: AGM's high burst current and alternator-friendly charging keep it the right choice for chassis batteries.
  • Sub-freezing charging without protection: lithium cells must not be charged below freezing. Low-temp cutoff (which the Eco-Worthy has) protects the pack by pausing charging; AGM keeps charging in the cold, albeit slowly. Deep-winter campers should look at self-heating lithium or keep batteries in heated compartments.
  • A rig you're selling next season: if the RV is going away soon, a cheap AGM swap may be all it deserves.
