Can I bring a portable generator to Stagecoach RV camping?
No. At The Resort, Stagecoach's RV camping, portable generators are banned by Indio Fire, "excluding Solar Powered". Only factory-installed RV generators may run, with "no aftermarket installs", and staff can still ask you to shut a built-in unit down if its exhaust bothers your neighbors. We checked this on the festival's own camping page in September 2026; rules change every year, so read the current page before you pack.
You probably do not need one
Every Resort site serves 30 amp and 50 amp power. The things that actually catch people are:
- The cord. Stagecoach tells RV campers to bring 50 to 75 feet of cord. Most RVs ship with 25 or 30 feet, so you need an RV extension rated for your service. We do not stock RV extension cords; buy a 30 or 50 amp one from an RV supply store, matched to your plug. A generator cord is not a pedestal extension.
- The breaker. Pop the pedestal breaker once and staff reset it with a warning. Pop it twice and your RV is disconnected for the rest of the festival without a refund.
Staying under the breaker
The usual cause is two roof air conditioners starting at once while a microwave or hair dryer runs. On a 30 amp pedestal that trips fast.
- One high-draw load at a time. A/C, microwave, kettle and hair dryer take turns.
- Stagger the A/C starts. Let one compressor settle before the second starts.
- Let a battery carry the peaks. A Victron MultiPlus-II can cap what it draws from the pedestal and make up the difference from a battery, so the pedestal stays under its limit.
If you want quiet power as well
Solar is explicitly allowed. A lithium bank such as one 12V 280Ah LiFePO4 covers a fridge, fans and devices for a weekend, and a panel on a SmartSolar MPPT tops it up by day. Add a SmartShunt for a real state of charge. Indio is about 75 miles from our Upland counter on I-10, so collection on the way out is easy.
