Leaf spring or independent suspension for serious off-road towing?
How they differ
Leaf springs put a solid axle on stacked steel leaves. There is very little to go wrong, and what does go wrong can be fixed or replaced in most towns. That simplicity is the whole argument.
Independent suspension lets each wheel move on its own. Over rough ground that means better wheel control, a smoother ride and more articulation, because one wheel dropping into a hole does not drag the other with it. Premium off-road campers, including the Black Series HQ range with its independent trailing arms, use it for exactly that reason. The trade is that it costs more to build and more to repair.
Which to choose
- Remote travel where any repair has to be done by the side of the track or in a small town: the serviceability of leaf springs is a real advantage.
- Long corrugated roads, ruts and articulation-heavy tracks, and caring how the camper rides behind the vehicle: independent is the better system, provided you keep up with the wear parts.
What wears on independent suspension
Corrugations load a trailer's suspension far harder than highway miles, so on an independent setup plan for these, roughly in this order:
- Bushings at the arm pivots go first. A clunk over bumps, play at the pivot, or tire wear no alignment explains. Replace the bolts with them.
- Shocks fade rather than fail. A camper that wallows, keeps bouncing after a dip or skips across corrugations needs them. Replace in pairs across the axle.
- Springs sag over years or when a camper is carried overloaded: low or uneven ride height and bottoming out on hits it used to absorb.
Black Series owners: check the generation first
On Black Series HQ campers, 2022 model year and newer use the 12/10-inch arm configuration, and those arms do not fit earlier campers. Shocks, springs and bushings are more forgiving across years, but confirm the build year from the compliance plate before ordering arms.
What we stock
We stock the independent-suspension wear parts for Black Series campers: arms, genuine off-road shocks, the factory-spec springs, bushings and safety chains. We do not stock leaf spring packs. Send us your model and year and we will confirm fitment. Everything ships from Upland, California.
