Renogy Charge Controllers Explained: Wanderer, Adventurer, Voyager or Rover?

Renogy makes PWM and MPPT charge controllers, and the names don't tell you much. How to pick the right Wanderer, Adventurer, Voyager or Rover for your RV by array size and mounting location.

The short version: Renogy makes two kinds of charge controller. The PWM ones (Wanderer, Adventurer, Voyager) are cheap and fine for a small 12V array. The MPPT ones (the Rover family) harvest more from the same panels and are the right call from about 200W up, or any time your panels are wired in series. Pick by array size and where the controller will live: under ~130W, a Wanderer 10A; a small kit you may grow, a Wanderer Li 30A; set into a wall, the Adventurer Li 30A; somewhere wet, the Voyager 20A; 200W and up, a Rover sized to the array.

Renogy sells more charge controllers than most RV owners need to compare, and the names do not tell you much. This guide sorts the range the way you actually choose: first PWM or MPPT, then how big your array is, then where the controller has to live. Every controller below is one we stock.

First decision: PWM or MPPT

A PWM controller connects the panel to the battery and pulls the panel down to battery voltage. That works, but a 12V-nominal panel produces its best power at around 18–20V, so the difference is thrown away as heat. An MPPT controller converts that extra voltage into extra charging current, which is why it harvests more from the same roof, especially in cold weather, when panel voltage rises. MPPT also lets you wire panels in series, which means thinner cable on long runs.

The practical rule: on a small 12V array of one or two panels wired in parallel, PWM is good value. Once you are past about 200W, or you want series wiring, the extra harvest pays for the MPPT. For the full explanation, see our MPPT vs PWM guide.

One caution on the Voyager: it is a common-positive-ground controller. Most RV 12V systems are negative-ground to the chassis, so check your wiring or ask us before you install one into an existing RV system.

Sizing it to your array

At 12V, divide the array watts by about 13 to get the charging current, then pick the next controller up. These are the steps we use in our RV solar calculator:

  • Up to ~130W: Wanderer 10A
  • Up to ~260W: Rover Li 20A (or a Wanderer Li 30A if budget comes first)
  • Up to ~400W: Rover Li 30A
  • Up to ~520W: Rover Li 40A
  • Up to ~800W: Rover 60A or Rover Lite 60A
  • Up to ~1,300W: Rover 100A

Leave headroom if you plan to add panels. Swapping a controller later costs more than buying one size up now.

Lithium batteries

Every controller above can charge LiFePO4; the thing to get right is the charging profile, which you set on the controller or in the app. The Rover Li controllers can also send a small current into a lithium battery whose BMS has shut it off at zero volts, which can recover a bank that would otherwise need a separate charger. If your battery lives somewhere that drops below freezing, pair it with a self-heating battery such as the Renogy Rego 104Ah, because lithium must not be charged below 32°F.

FAQ

Can I use a Renogy controller with a non-Renogy battery?

Yes. Set the correct battery type and voltages and a Renogy controller will charge any 12V lead-acid or LiFePO4 battery, including Victron, Battle Born or Eco-Worthy.

What is the difference between the Wanderer and the Wanderer Li?

The Wanderer Li 30A is the larger, lithium-optimised model, with an RS232 port for Bluetooth monitoring through the BT-1 module. The Wanderer 10A is a compact controller for a single small panel.

Do I need Bluetooth?

Not to charge the battery, but it is the easiest way to confirm the system is working and to change settings. The Rover 2 has it built in; most other models take a plug-in BT-1 or BT-2 module.

Renogy or Victron?
