What fuse do I use on a 48V Victron inverter?

Short answer: Take the size from the inverter's manual, then check two ratings most 12V advice skips. The fuse must be DC-rated above your system's maximum voltage, and many common DC fuses are rated 32V, which rules them out at 48V. On lithium, one fuse in the line also needs an interrupt rating above the bank's short-circuit current, which usually means Class T.

Current rating: the manual first

Every Victron manual states the recommended battery cable and fuse size for that model, and where it differs from general advice, the manual wins. The fuse protects the cable: with one device on the circuit, it matches the device's rating or the cable's, whichever is lower. Use a slow fuse on an inverter feed, because the input capacitors draw a large inrush.

Voltage rating: where 12V habits go wrong

The fuse must be rated for DC, at or above the system's maximum voltage, not its nominal 48. Victron's guidance is blunt that most DC fuses suit 12 and 24 volt systems but are not necessarily suitable for 48 volts and above, and that a fuse's AC rating is often higher than its DC rating, so read the DC figure.

That matters here. The Victron MEGA, ANL and MIDI fuses we stock are 32V DC parts. They are fine on 12 and 24 volt systems and the wrong choice on a 48 volt bank. Victron's own reference table shows the spread across fuse types: some MEGA variants from other makers are rated 58 or 70 volts DC, Blue Sea ANL 80 volts, Class T 125 to 300 volts, and NH fuses 250 volts. Check the actual part you buy, against your battery's highest charge voltage.

Interrupt rating: the lithium rule

On any lithium bank, Victron makes it a mandatory safety requirement that at least one fuse in the DC line can interrupt the bank's maximum prospective short-circuit current. That figure is on your battery's datasheet. Class T is Victron's recommended answer because of its very high interrupt rating. The Lynx Class-T Power In busbar has a position for one; we do not currently stock standalone Class T fuses, so source one rated for your bank's fault current and your system voltage.

Multiple inverters

Fuse each unit individually with the same fuse type, so every DC path has the same resistance. One big fuse for the whole system can fail to open on a fault inside a single inverter.

What we stock for 48V

The CNN 325A fuse we carry is rated 80V DC, but it is made for the Lynx Shunt and Lynx Smart BMS fuse slots, not as a general inline fuse. We also stock 48V inverter-chargers such as the MultiPlus 48/2000. Send us the inverter model, the battery datasheet and your cable lengths and we will work through the fuse with you before you order. Everything ships from Upland, California.
