Interior trim that lifts at the edges. Panels that crack, warp or come away from the wall. Laminate that bubbles. Owners of off-road campers report all of it, and the reports cluster around one thing: corrugations.
This guide covers why it happens, what to fix it with, and how to make the repair hold, because the second failure is usually the same as the first.
Why it happens
Three forces act on interior trim in an off-road camper, and the factory adhesive was chosen for a fourth situation entirely.
Vibration. Corrugated roads shake every panel thousands of times per kilometre. An adhesive bond that is fine on a highway is being fatigue-tested off it.
Heat cycling. A closed camper in the sun reaches temperatures that soften many adhesives. Then it cools overnight and the substrate shrinks. Repeat daily.
Moisture. Condensation and the occasional leak get behind panels, and most wood-based substrates swell when damp and shrink when they dry. The adhesive bond does not follow.
The factory bond. Production adhesives are chosen for speed of assembly and cost, applied by people working fast. Coverage is often partial, and the parts of a panel that were never glued in the first place lift first.
None of this means the camper is badly built. It means interior trim is a wear item on a vehicle that gets used the way these do, and knowing that changes how you repair it.
The adhesive owners actually use
Owners on the long-running Black Series threads consistently report using 3M Hi-Strength 90 spray adhesive for trim and panel repairs, and reporting that it holds where the factory bond did not.
That is a community recommendation rather than a manufacturer specification, and it is worth saying why it keeps coming up:
- It is a contact adhesive, so it bonds on contact under pressure rather than needing clamping while it cures, which matters on a curved trim piece you cannot clamp.
- It has reasonable heat resistance for a spray adhesive, which most household glues do not.
- It bonds laminates, foam, fabric and wood, which covers most of what is inside a camper.
- It is a spray, so coverage is even over a large panel rather than in a few dabs.
Use it as a contact adhesive, meaning both surfaces, wait until tacky, then press together. Applying it wet to one side and pressing immediately is how it fails.
Doing the repair so it lasts
1. Take the trim off completely
A lifted corner tempts you to squirt glue under it and press. Do not. The rest of the panel is bonded on the same failing adhesive, and the corner you fix will simply be the last part to let go.
Remove the trim or panel fully. Note where any clips or fixings were, because they go back.
2. Clean off every trace of the old adhesive
This is the step that decides whether the repair holds. New adhesive over old, failed adhesive is bonded to the failure.
Scrape, then solvent-clean both the panel and the substrate back to bare material. Let the solvent flash off fully before applying anything.
3. Deal with the cause
If the panel came off because it got wet, find the water. Our guide to water leaks covers the usual entry points. Re-gluing a panel onto a substrate that is still damp, or will be damp again next trip, is a temporary fix.
If the substrate itself has swollen or crumbled, cut it back to sound material. Glue holds to what it is stuck to, and it cannot hold to particleboard that has turned to porridge.
4. Apply as a contact adhesive
Both surfaces, even coverage, edge to edge. Wait until it is tacky to the touch but does not transfer to your finger. Then position carefully, because a contact adhesive grabs on first touch and does not let you slide it.
Press firmly across the whole area, working from the centre out so you do not trap air. A roller is better than a hand. Pay particular attention to the edges, because that is where the load concentrates and where it will lift first if anywhere.
5. Add mechanical fixing at the stress points
Adhesive alone was what failed. Where the panel takes load, add a screw or a clip. A trim strip that runs along a corner, a panel edge that gets knocked, the top edge of anything that vibration tries to peel downward.
Small stainless screws with finishing caps look fine and stop the peel starting. A repair that combines adhesive with a fixing at each end outlasts adhesive alone by years.
6. Leave it alone
Contact adhesive reaches full strength over a day or more. Do not load the panel, do not slam the cupboard next to it, and do not take the camper on corrugations that afternoon.
Cabinet doors, drawers and hardware
Delamination on cabinet doors is often the door swinging open on the road and getting damaged, rather than the laminate failing on its own. A door that opens in transit hits things, and its edge takes a beating.
Fix the latch before you fix the door. A push latch that holds the door shut, or a magnetic catch on doors that need to stay open when the camper is parked, stops the damage repeating. Our guide to cabinet hinge and drawer latch failures covers the hardware side.
When a panel is beyond repair
Interior trim can almost always be re-bonded. Structural exterior panels cannot, and a body panel that has been damaged by impact or corrosion is a replacement rather than a repair. The front aluminium body panel and the diamond plate side and rear panel set are the genuine OEM replacements for HQ Series exterior panels.
The short version
Remove it all, clean to bare, fix the cause, bond as a contact adhesive with even coverage, add a screw where it takes load, and leave it a day. Skip any of those and you will be doing it again.
