The OutEquipPro Summit 2 is designed to drop into the hole left by a standard RV roof fan. This guide summarizes what OutEquipPro's 2026 installation guide says about the opening, the roof thickness and the sealing, so you can check the fit before the unit arrives. It is a summary, not a replacement for the manual, and OutEquipPro says the unit should be installed by a qualified technician or someone with proper mechanical and electrical knowledge.
Opening sizes
| Opening | Size | Gasket to use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard square | 14.1 x 14.1 in (358 x 358 mm) | The pre-sized square gasket |
| Minimum rectangle | 14.1 x 10.3 in (358 x 262 mm) | The universal strip gasket, trimmed to fit |
| Maximum | 16.5 x 15.7 in (420 x 400 mm) | The universal strip gasket |
OutEquipPro calls the 14.1 x 14.1 inch opening the ideal size for replacing a standard RV fan. The 14.1 x 10.3 inch minimum comes from the mounting plate, whose fit area is 14 x 10.2 inches. If you are cutting a new hole in a van roof rather than reusing a fan opening, the smaller rectangle is an option.
Check the roof before you start
- Flat, level and strong: the roof around the opening must carry about 45 lb, parked and moving. OutEquipPro accepts a roof slope of up to 5°, front to back or side to side.
- Clearance: at least 2 inches on the left, right and rear from solar panels, racks or anything else, so the condenser gets air.
- Footprint: the unit is 28.3 x 28.3 x 6.3 inches. Measured from the air duct, it reaches 4.9 inches forward, 14.4 rearward, 7.3 left and 7 right.
- Ribbed roofs: notch the gasket to the ribs, trim it or shim where a mounting point lands on a rib, and add extra sealant in the contoured areas.
Roof thickness: thin, standard and thick
OutEquipPro measures roof thickness from the outside roof surface to the inside face of the ceiling panel, including insulation and any gap.
| Roof thickness | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 1.5 in (for example a sheet-metal van) | Build a wooden frame around the inside of the opening so the mounting plate presses on wood, not thin metal. Trim the indoor panel's air duct, and shorten the threaded rods and screws so the panel sits flush. |
| 1.5 to 3.5 in | No changes: the rods and duct are sized for this range. |
| 3.5 to 8.7 in | OutEquipPro's optional Air Duct Extension Kit is required: a longer duct spacer, rods and screws you trim to length. OutEquipPro sells the kit separately and it isn't part of our listing, so ask us before you order. |
The Summit Flex uses the same ranges for a roof or a wall: 1.5 to 3.5 inches as standard, 3.6 to 8.7 inches with the extension kit.
Step by step, in brief
- Disconnect power from the RV's battery and any other source.
- Prepare the opening, then clean and dry the roof around it.
- Fit the gasket: the square gasket for a 14.1 x 14.1 opening, or the strip gasket trimmed to length, with tight, gap-free ends, for other sizes.
- Seal it: run a continuous bead of UV-resistant RV sealant around the outer edge of the gasket and smooth it. Use a sealant compatible with your roof material, and let it cure (usually 24 to 48 hours) before rain or washing. We stock Dicor sealants and roof care.
- Place the support blocks under both rear corners and check level.
- Set the unit on the gasket, with the chassis drainage cutout outside the gasket. In a 14.1 x 14.1 opening, offset the air duct 2.36 to 3.15 inches toward the rear of the vehicle so the drain stays outside.
- Route the power cable one of three ways: through a separate hole sealed with a cable gland or grommet, down through the return air duct inside the unit, or through a snug notch in the gasket.
- Fit the mounting plate from inside with the four bolts or rods. Tighten by hand, then gradually in a crisscross pattern. OutEquipPro's torque is under 1.5 Nm, or hand-tight plus a quarter turn; overtightening can crush the roof structure.
- Insulate the ceiling gap with the supplied foam strips so hot air in the cavity isn't drawn into the return.
- Connect the indoor panel: three plugs on cooling-only models, four on heater models. Clip the temperature sensor above the return grille, away from the cold outlets, then screw the panel to the unit.
Wiring to the battery
The Summit 2 comes with a power cord (OutEquipPro's spec sheet lists 14 feet) with the inline fuse fitted: 6 AWG and 100 A on the 12V model, 8 AWG and 80 A on the 24V, 8 AWG and 50 A on the 48V. OutEquipPro's guide cites NFPA 1192 and NFPA 70 for US installations. Size the battery for the current too: see how much battery an OutEquipPro 12V AC needs and Summit 2 12V vs 24V vs 48V.
After the install
OutEquipPro asks you to test the system and check for gaps, loose parts or exposed wires once it is in. Don't power wash the unit or clean it with detergent. If the opening was your only roof vent, plan another way to vent cooking and shower steam.
Frequently asked questions
Will the Summit 2 fit my existing 14 x 14 fan opening?
OutEquipPro gives 14.1 x 14.1 inches as the standard square opening for replacing an RV fan, and includes a square gasket for it. Measure yours: the accepted range runs from 14.1 x 10.3 up to 16.5 x 15.7 inches.
My roof is 4 inches thick. Can I still install it?
Yes, with OutEquipPro's Air Duct Extension Kit, which covers roofs over 3.5 and up to 8.7 inches thick.
Do I need to handle refrigerant?
No. The Summit 2 is pre-filled. The indoor panel joins the rooftop unit through the duct and keyed wiring plugs, with no refrigerant lines.
Does a Glacier Pro fit the same opening?
It fits a 14.1 x 14.1 opening too, but you drill eight mounting holes with the supplied template; OutEquipPro recommends an 18.1 x 14.1 inch opening for an easier install. Compare the two in Summit 2 vs Glacier Pro.
