Will I pay duty and tax on Black Series HQ parts shipped to Canada?
It depends on the value of the parcel, and the part that catches owners out is where the part was made. There is no Black Series parts dealer in Canada at the time of writing, so the HQ-specific parts have to cross the border, and shipping from the US does not by itself make a part duty-free: that depends on the country of origin shown on the commercial invoice.
When CUSMA makes a part duty-free
The North American trade agreement waives duty on goods of North American origin. Whether a part qualifies depends on the country of origin shown on the commercial invoice, not on shipping from a US warehouse. Duty and tax may apply depending on that origin and the value of the courier shipment.
What Canada charges at each value
| Order value | What Canada charges |
|---|---|
| Under CAD 40 | Nothing |
| CAD 40 to 150 | Your province's sales tax only |
| Over CAD 150 | Sales tax, plus any duty that applies to the part's category and country of origin |
Two more costs sit on top. The shipping charge, which our checkout calculates and shows for your address before you pay, and any brokerage fee the carrier charges for clearing the parcel, which is yours under our shipping policy.
How to keep it down
Order small parts on their own when that is all you need. A single strut, lock or seal strip ships cheaply and clears with little or no charge.
Group the big orders. A suspension order or a set of panels is a larger parcel where the duty and brokerage are real. Put everything you need for the season into one order rather than three.
Buy the standard parts in Canada. Not everything on an HQ has to be imported. The wheel bearings and seals are standard Timken sets any Canadian trailer shop stocks. Victron electrical is available from Canadian authorised Victron dealers. Fuses, breakers, LED bulbs, plumbing fittings, sealant, tape and tyres are all local. What has no Canadian source is the HQ-specific hardware: the suspension, the pop-top strut, the external storage door locks and seal strips, the skylight, the control panel and relay, and the stabiliser legs.
Plan for the lead time, not only the cost
For a Canadian owner the lead time matters more than the charge. A US parcel with customs clearance takes a week or two, which is a trip lost if something fails on the road. Order the spares you would hate to wait for in one parcel before the season: bearings and seals for one hub, a strut, a door lock, a seal strip, fuses and water pump fittings.
Send us a photo of the broken part and we will tell you what it is, whether it is a local part or one of ours, and what it costs landed. Everything we stock ships from Upland, California.
