Which seal stops dust getting into Black Series storage compartments?

Short answer: For the external storage doors on HQ Series campers, the genuine OEM external storage door rubber strip runs the whole opening as one piece. For everything else, hatches, cavities and windows, the self-adhesive bubble-profile EPDM rubber seal is the universal fix. Before you replace anything, close the door on a strip of paper around the frame: where it pulls out freely, the seal is not compressing and the door or latch needs adjusting.

External storage compartments are the most common dust complaint on these campers and the easiest to fix. Dust is not blown in; it is drawn in. A moving camper is a box with air rushing past it, the pressure drops at every edge, and the dust cloud at the back gets pulled through whichever gap faces it. Rear-facing and low compartments fill first, and a seal compressed on three sides and lifted a millimetre on the fourth is a chimney.

Test the seal before you buy one

The compartment door seal runs around the whole opening and only works when the door compresses it evenly all the way round. Close the door on a strip of paper at several points around the frame. Where the paper pulls out freely, the seal is not compressing.

  • Gaps at the bottom only: the door has dropped on its hinges. Adjust the door or the latch first; a new seal will gap in the same place.
  • Seal that no longer springs back when pressed, or has gone hard, flat or cracked: replace it. EPDM lasts well but not forever.
  • Even gap all round: the latch is not pulling the door home. A worn external storage door lock whose cam has worn lets the door rattle open a fraction on corrugations regardless of the seal.

A quicker test at dusk: shut the door with a torch inside and look for light leaking out. It finds the gap on the side you were not looking at.

Which seal to fit

HQ Series compartment doors: the whole external storage door rubber strip is the genuine OEM seal, made as one piece to run the full opening with no joins for dust to find.

Pop-top and top door on a Dominator or HQ12: the seal point there is held by the top door latch with red rubber, and a latch that no longer pulls the door down hard enough is a leak whatever the rubber's condition.

Hatches, windows, cavities and anything without a dedicated OEM part: the self-adhesive bubble-profile EPDM rubber seal. It follows a curve and the bubble compresses to fill an uneven gap.

Fitting notes

  • Clean the channel back to bare, dry surface. Adhesive over old rubber, dust or damp lets go.
  • Fit the seal in one run where you can, with the join at the top of the opening where dust pressure is lowest.
  • Re-check with the paper test after fitting, then again after the first dusty trip.

While the compartment is empty

Get underneath with a torch and look at every wire and hose passing into the body. Owners have reported campers built with grommets missing at pass-throughs, and a wire through a bare hole is both a dust path and a chafe point. A grommet, or sealant where the hole is too irregular, closes it. Genuine Black Series seals and latches ship from Upland, California.
