How does LiTime's LiHeat self-heating battery warm itself in winter?

Answered by RV Parts Giant · Upland, CA · October 10, 2026

Short answer: LiHeat batteries have two heating modes. With a charger connected they warm themselves automatically before taking a charge, and without one they can preheat from their own stored energy before you start charging. Either way the cells are warmed before charge current flows, which is what protects lithium in the cold.

Two modes, one goal

Lithium iron phosphate must not be charged below freezing. A standard LiTime battery protects itself by refusing to charge: the 12V 200Ah, for example, stops charging at 32°F and resumes at 41°F. That is safe, but on a cold morning it means solar and alternator charge is wasted until the battery warms on its own.

LiTime's LiHeat models add heating, which LiTime calls dual-mode:

  1. Plug-in heating. When a charger is connected, the battery warms itself automatically, then accepts the charge.
  2. Self-powered preheat. Without outside power, it can preheat using its own stored energy before charging.

LiTime's pitch is that you no longer have to carry the battery indoors to warm it before charging.

The two LiHeat batteries we carry

LiTime LiHeat Case Energy BMS / output
12V 165Ah Group 31 (13 x 6.77 x 8.5 in) 2,112Wh 165A continuous, 825A for 1 s
12V 320Ah Mini 14.49 x 7.44 x 10.04 in, 57.3 lb 4,096Wh 200A, 2,560W continuous, 1,000A for 1 s

Both have Bluetooth with password control, IP65 cases and LiTime's 5-year warranty.

Do you need one?

Only if the battery is charged while it is cold. A bank inside heated living space rarely needs heating; a bank in an outside locker on a winter trip does. Self-heating spends some stored energy, so mount the battery somewhere warm when you can.
