Every boat board has the same thread each spring: the trailer brakes worked last season, the trailer was launched in salt water a dozen times, and now the brakes drag, grab, or do nothing. The owners asking are usually running the wrong kind of brake for a trailer that gets dunked, and the fix is knowing which kind survives.
Why electric drum brakes fail on a launched trailer
Electric trailer brakes are the standard on campers and cargo trailers for a reason: they are simple, cheap and controlled from the cab. They are also built for a trailer that stays dry. Inside the drum is an electromagnet, a pair of shoes on a steel backing plate, springs and an adjuster. Submerge that assembly in salt water, then let it sit for a week, and the magnet face corrodes, the springs rust, the adjuster seizes and the shoes glaze with salt. The brake does not fail on the first launch. It fails on the tenth, usually as a grab on one side.
If a boat trailer has electric drum brakes and launches in fresh water only, with a rinse afterwards, they can last. In salt water they will not, and no amount of grease fixes it.
The brake types that survive
Hydraulic surge drum brakes. A master cylinder in the coupler applies the brakes when the trailer pushes against the tow vehicle. The drums are galvanized and the wheel cylinders sealed, so the system tolerates immersion better than electric. It still needs flushing, and drum brakes hold water inside the drum longer than discs.
Hydraulic disc brakes. Open rotors and calipers shed water and dry fast, and stainless or coated rotors with stainless calipers are the standard for salt-water trailers. Surge-actuated disc is the most common setup on wake boats and larger PWC trailers. A reverse lockout solenoid lets the trailer back up a ramp without the brakes applying.
Electric-over-hydraulic disc. An electric actuator on the trailer converts the brake controller's signal into hydraulic pressure at disc brakes. It gives the cab-controlled feel of electric brakes with the salt tolerance of hydraulic disc, at the cost of an actuator and a 7-pin connection with a brake controller in the truck.
For a trailer that meets salt water, the order of preference is disc over drum and hydraulic over electric. If the trailer already has electric drums and you launch in salt, budget for a conversion rather than a rebuild.
If the trailer is ours
Our sister store, Black Series Marine, sells two aluminum trailers built for exactly this use: a single-axle PWC and small-boat trailer on a 1,655 lb torsion axle, and a 25 ft tandem boat trailer on two 5,200 lb torsion axles with a brake axle. Torsion axles have no shackles or bushings to seize after a salt launch, which is why they were chosen. The routine that decides how long any of them last
- Flush after every salt launch. Disc brake kits usually have a flush port; put a hose on it before you leave the ramp. Drum brakes need the hose aimed into the backing plate openings.
- Let the hubs cool before launching. A hot hub pushed into cold water pulls water past the seal as the air inside contracts. Ten minutes at the ramp saves a bearing.
- Check the hubs by hand at the first stop on the way home. Warm is right. Hot, or hotter on one side, is a dragging brake or a bearing that took water.
- Repack the bearings every season regardless of miles, with fresh seals every time.
The parts that are the same whatever brakes you run
Bearings and seals do not care what brake is bolted behind them. A boat trailer axle is the same 3,500 lb or 5,200 to 7,000 lb spindle as a camper axle, and the same Timken sets fit: 10-inch drum kit for the 3,500 lb spindle, 12-inch kit for the heavier one. Fit a new cotter pin every time, and a hubcap that seals, because a missing cap is the fastest way to get salt into the outer bearing.
If the trailer is dry-launched or fresh-water only and you want to keep electric drums, the greased hub-and-drum assembly is the straight replacement for a drum that has scored past its limit.
