Cruisemaster DO35 vs DO45 Off-Road Couplers Explained

Cruisemaster DO35 vs DO45 off-road couplers compared: articulation, load rating, and which suits your trailer - plus the tow pin kits you need. Ships from Upland, CA.

Cruisemaster articulating couplers are the gold standard for off-road trailers, letting the trailer pivot freely over rough terrain without straining the hitch. The two you'll see most are the DO35 and DO45 — known in the US as off-road hitches. Here's the difference and how to choose.

What an articulating coupler does

Unlike a standard ball hitch, an articulating off-road coupler allows full three-axis movement — pitch, roll, and yaw — so the trailer can twist independently of the tow vehicle on uneven ground. The Cruisemaster DO series is a drop-on pin design (DO = "Drop-On"): the coupling drops over a tow pin and locks with a positive two-stage latch, protecting the chassis and keeping wheels planted.

DO35 vs DO45: the difference

Factor DO35 DO45
Rated capacity 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) 4,500 kg (9,921 lb)
Best for Most off-road camper trailers Heavier / fully-loaded rigs
Articulation Full 3-axis Full 3-axis
Build Proven, widely-used standard Heavier-duty, larger pin, wider 4-bolt pattern
Tow pin kit DO35 tow pin kit DO45 tow pin kit

In short: the DO35 suits the majority of off-road campers, while the DO45 steps up load capacity for heavier rigs.

Quick pick by trailer weight

The simplest way to choose is your trailer's loaded weight (GTM/ATM):

  • Under 3,500 kg — the DO35 has plenty of margin and is the right choice for the large majority of off-road camper trailers and caravans.
  • 3,500–4,500 kg — step up to the DO45 so you're not running a coupling near its ceiling.

Note: the DO45 uses a wider 4-bolt mounting pattern than the DO35, so check your existing mounting plate before upgrading from a DO35.

Don't forget the tow pin kit

The coupler connects to your vehicle via a matching tow pin kit — a DO35 tow pin kit for the DO35, and the DO45 tow pin kit for the DO45. They're not interchangeable, so order the kit that matches your coupler.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a DO45 coupler with a DO35 tow pin?

No — the pin sizes differ. Match the tow pin kit to the coupler model.

Which coupler do most camper trailers use?

The DO35 is the most common choice; step up to the DO45 for heavier trailers or a higher rating.

What does "DO" stand for?

"Drop-On" — the coupling drops onto a fixed tow pin rather than a tow ball, which is what gives it full off-road articulation.
