RV 12V Fuse Keeps Blowing: How to Find the Short

A fuse that blows with nothing switched on means a short, not an overload. How to tell them apart, where RV wiring chafes, and how to trace it safely.

A fuse that blows the instant you fit it, with every switch off, is not an overload. It is a short circuit, and the fuse is doing exactly what it was installed to do.

The distinction matters because the two faults are found in completely different ways.

First, work out which one you have

Overload: the circuit is carrying more current than the fuse allows, but the current is going somewhere useful. The fuse usually survives a while and then fails, often when several things are on together, or when a motor is starting.

Signs: the fuse blows after minutes or hours, not instantly. It blows when you switch something on. Adding a load makes it worse.

Short circuit: positive is touching ground somewhere, so current takes a path with almost no resistance. The fuse fails instantly and violently, and often looks blackened rather than just parted.

Signs: it blows the moment you fit it, with everything switched off. That is the clearest diagnostic in the whole exercise.

Do not fit a larger fuse in either case. On an overload you will overheat the wiring. On a short you will heat a wire until something melts or burns. The fuse rating is set by the cable it protects.

Finding a short

The method is halving. You are trying to make the fault appear and disappear on demand.

1. Disconnect everything on that circuit. Unplug or disconnect every device the fuse feeds. Fit a fresh fuse.

  • Fuse survives: the fault is in a device or in the wiring to one of them. Reconnect them one at a time, fitting a new fuse each time if needed, until it blows. That is your culprit.
  • Fuse blows with everything disconnected: the fault is in the fixed wiring. Continue below.

2. Split the run. Find a midpoint in the circuit, usually a connector or junction, and disconnect there. Whichever half still blows the fuse contains the fault. Repeat on that half.

Two or three splits usually gets you within a metre.

3. Look where wiring moves or passes through metal. Chafe is the overwhelming cause on an RV, and it concentrates in predictable places:

  • Pass-throughs in the chassis or a bulkhead, especially where a grommet is missing. Missing grommets are a known build issue on some campers, and a wire rubbing on a cut steel edge will eventually get through its insulation.
  • Slide-out mechanisms, where a loom flexes thousands of times.
  • Behind and under drawers and lockers, where cargo shifts against wiring.
  • Near the suspension and axles, where road debris and movement combine.
  • Anywhere a screw has been driven after the vehicle was built. A television bracket or an accessory mount that catches a hidden wire is a classic, and the symptom appears weeks later when vibration completes the path.

4. Use resistance rather than fuses. Rather than sacrificing fuses, disconnect the supply and measure resistance from the circuit's positive to ground. A near-zero reading is your short. As you disconnect sections, watch for the reading to jump to open circuit. That tells you which section holds the fault, and it costs nothing in fuses.

When it really is an overload

If the fuse survives a while and fails under load, count what is actually on that circuit. Rigs accumulate additions, and the circuit that ran two lights from the factory may now also feed a fridge fan, a phone charger and an inverter someone added.

Two legitimate fixes:

  • Move a load to its own circuit with its own appropriately sized fuse.
  • Increase the fuse only if the cable supports it, which means checking the wire gauge first, not the other way round. If the cable is not rated for the larger fuse, the cable has to be upgraded too.

A load that trips a fuse only on startup, such as a pump or a fan, may need a slow-blow fuse rather than a bigger one.

The intermittent version

Hardest case: a fuse that blows every few weeks with no pattern.

That is almost always a chafe that only touches under movement, vibration or temperature. Things that help:

  • Drive the rig with the panel accessible and see whether rough road triggers it.
  • Check whether it correlates with wet weather, which points at a connection rather than a chafe.
  • Inspect looms with the suspension loaded and unloaded, since the geometry changes.

Repairing it properly

When you find the damage, repair rather than patch.

  • Cut back to undamaged insulation on both sides.
  • Use a proper splice, crimped and sealed, not twisted and taped. Tape unwinds in heat.
  • Support the repair so it cannot move against whatever caused the original damage.
  • Fit a grommet wherever a wire passes through metal, or sleeve the wire if you cannot.
  • Replace the section rather than splice if the run is short. A length of flexible stranded wire is cheaper than a repair you do not trust.

Fine-stranded silicone-insulated wire handles vibration and heat better than the cheap solid or coarse-stranded wire found in some builds, which is worth knowing if you are replacing a run that has already failed once.

Preventing the next one

Give big loads their own protected feed. A MIDI fuse in a holder close to the source, or a resettable DC breaker you can switch by hand, is better than adding another wire to an already loaded circuit.

Distribute properly. A busbar gives every circuit a clean, inspectable connection instead of a growing stack of ring terminals.

Fuse at the source. A fuse protects the cable from the point it is fitted onwards. A fuse at the far end of a long unprotected run protects almost nothing.

If the main fuse is the one blowing

A blown main fuse or reverse polarity fuse produces a completely dead coach rather than one dead circuit. That is a different diagnosis, covered in no 12V power in your RV.
