RV LED Lights Flickering or Failing: Causes and Fixes

Why RV LED lights flicker, buzz or die early, how voltage and dimmers cause it, and what to look for in a replacement that lasts on 12 volts.

LEDs are supposed to last for years and draw almost nothing. In an RV they often flicker, buzz, glow faintly when switched off, or fail in a season.

None of that is normal, and the cause is usually the electrical environment rather than the bulb.

Why 12 volts is harder on an LED than it looks

A house LED runs on a stable supply. An RV LED does not.

Your "12 volt" system is nothing of the sort. It sits near 12.0 volts on a tired battery, around 12.7 rested, and can reach 14.4 or higher while charging. Some converters push briefly higher still.

A cheap LED with no regulation is being asked to cope with that whole range. Many of them do it by burning off the excess as heat, which is why they fail early. Better ones include a driver that holds output constant across the range, and they cost slightly more for exactly that reason.

When buying, look for a stated input range rather than a single voltage. Something rated across roughly 10 to 30 volts will tolerate charging voltages without stress. A bulb marked simply "12 V" tells you nothing about what happens at 14.6.

The specific symptoms and what causes them

Flickering that follows the engine or the charger

The supply voltage is moving and the light is following it.

Common on rigs where the alternator or converter output swings, and worse on long or undersized runs where voltage drops under load. A regulated bulb fixes it. If a whole circuit does it, look at the wiring rather than the bulbs.

Flickering only on a dimmer

The most common cause of all, and it is a compatibility problem.

Most RV dimmers were built for incandescent bulbs and work by chopping the supply. An LED draws so little current that the dimmer cannot regulate smoothly, so you get flicker, buzzing, a limited usable range, or lights that will not go dim at all.

Fixes, in order of preference:

  1. Use LEDs specifically stated to be dimmable and compatible with your dimmer type.
  2. Replace the dimmer with one intended for LED loads.
  3. Remove the dimmer and use switched fixtures instead.

Mixing LED and incandescent on one dimmer circuit reliably produces trouble. Convert the whole circuit or none of it.

A faint glow when switched off

Odd but common. A small leakage current, often through a switch with an indicator lamp or through capacitance in a long run, is enough to light an LED faintly because LEDs need so little.

It is not dangerous and it does not drain a meaningful amount. If it bothers you, a fixture with its own switch, or a different switch, resolves it.

Buzzing

Usually the driver reacting to a dimmer, or a poor-quality driver at a particular voltage. If it buzzes only on the dimmer, see above. If it buzzes everywhere, it is the bulb.

Early failure, especially in enclosed fixtures

Heat. LEDs produce less heat than incandescents but they are far more sensitive to it, and the electronics fail long before the diodes do.

An LED sealed in a small enclosed fixture with no airflow runs hot and dies early. A fixture designed as an LED fixture manages that heat; a bulb retrofitted into a sealed incandescent housing often does not.

One fixture flickers, the others are fine

That is a connection, not a bulb. Check the contacts in the holder, the earth, and the switch. A corroded contact adds resistance and the light responds to every vibration.

Color temperature, since you are choosing anyway

Worth deciding deliberately because it changes how the interior feels:

  • Around 2700 K: warm, close to the incandescent it replaces. Comfortable for evenings.
  • Around 4000 K: neutral. Good for a galley or a work area.
  • Around 6000 K: cool white, bright and clinical. Excellent in a compartment or under an awning, harsh in a bedroom.

Match them across a space. Mixed color temperatures in one room look wrong even when nobody can say why.

What to look for in a replacement

  • A stated voltage range, not a single figure.
  • A stated color temperature.
  • Real thermal design, meaning a fixture that can shed heat rather than a bulb crammed into a sealed housing.
  • Dimmable and dimmer-compatible, if it is going on a dimmed circuit.
  • Sensible output, since brighter is not automatically better in a small space.

What we stock

Before you blame the bulb

If several lights misbehave together, the problem is upstream. Low system voltage, a poor ground or a tired connection will make good bulbs look faulty.
