Victron Lithium Battery Guide: Smart vs NG vs SuperPack — Which LiFePO4 for Your RV?

Victron sells four different lithium battery lines — Smart, NG, SuperPack, and Peak Power Pack. Here's what each is for, which needs an external BMS, and how to size a LiFePO4 bank for your RV.

Victron's lithium lineup confuses more buyers than any other part of their catalog, because the four product lines look similar on the shelf but are built for different jobs — and two of them require an external battery management system while the other two have one built in. Here's the plain-English breakdown.

The Four Lines at a Glance

  • LiFePO4 Battery Smart (12.8V & 25.6V) — Victron's flagship. Bluetooth cell monitoring built in, but requires an external BMS (smallBMS, VE.Bus BMS, or Smart BMS). Made for permanently-installed systems with MultiPlus inverter/chargers. Parallel and series capable for big banks.
  • LiFePO4 NG — the new generation of the Smart line. Same system philosophy (external BMS, full integration), updated cells and electronics. Choose NG over Smart for a brand-new build.
  • Lithium SuperPack (12.8V & 25.6V) — BMS built in, with an internal safety switch. Drop-in simplicity: wire it like an AGM and go. The trade-off: no external BMS integration, limited series connection, and it will simply disconnect itself to self-protect rather than coordinating with your chargers.
  • Peak Power Pack — a self-contained portable lithium unit with integrated BMS and monitor, designed for movers/caravans and light-duty use — not the backbone of an off-grid bank.

The Decision That Matters: Integrated vs External BMS

If your system has a MultiPlus inverter/charger, a SmartSolar MPPT, and a Cerbo GX, the Smart/NG batteries with an external BMS are the right architecture: the BMS actively tells your chargers and inverter to throttle or stop before a protective disconnect ever happens, so the system degrades gracefully instead of going dark. The SuperPack's internal BMS can't talk to anything — it just opens its switch when pushed too far, which mid-boondock can mean a hard blackout and confused chargers.

Rule of thumb: permanent RV bank with Victron electronics → Smart or NG + appropriate BMS. Simple weekender trailer replacing an AGM one-for-one → SuperPack. Portable/backup power → Peak Power Pack.

Which BMS Goes with Smart/NG?

  • smallBMS / SmallBMS NG — compact, for systems without VE.Bus inverters or where simple load/charge disconnect signaling is enough.
  • VE.Bus BMS (V2/NG) — the standard partner for MultiPlus/Quattro systems; controls the inverter/charger directly over VE.Bus.
  • Smart BMS CL 12/100 & Smart BMS 12-200 — add alternator charge control with a built-in current limiter, ideal when you charge from the tow vehicle while driving.

Sizing Your Bank

Estimate your daily consumption (a typical off-grid couple with a 12V compressor fridge, lights, fans, water pump, and device charging lands around 100–150Ah/day at 12V). Then size for 2–3 days of autonomy: 200–300Ah for weekenders, 300–400Ah for regular off-grid trips, 400Ah+ for full-timers. Lithium's usable depth of discharge (~90%+) means a 200Ah LiFePO4 bank genuinely replaces roughly 400Ah of lead-acid — at half the weight, which your trailer's payload will thank you for.

Don't Forget the Charging Side

A lithium bank is only as good as what feeds it: pair it with enough solar through an MPPT controller, a DC-DC charger for alternator charging on driving days, and a correctly-profiled shore charger (every Victron charger has a lithium preset). Protect the wiring with proper fusing and, on larger banks, a Lynx distributor.
