Victron Energy does not sell to end users. Every unit reaches you through a dealer or distributor, and that arrangement is not just a sales channel. It decides who is responsible when something fails.
Most buyers discover this at the worst possible moment. Here is what Victron's own warranty policy actually says, and what it means for how you buy.
The part that surprises people
Victron's limited warranty is a warranty between Victron and its direct customers, meaning the OEMs, distributors and dealers it sells to. It is explicitly not a warranty between Victron and you.
The policy states that end users "shall not have any rights or remedies under this limited warranty towards Victron Energy directly."
Instead, the direct customer is obliged to pass an identical warranty on to you, and claims are made "at their place of purchase or through the original direct customer."
In plain terms: your warranty is only as good as the dealer you bought from. Victron backs the dealer. The dealer backs you.
This is why the forums fill up with threads from owners whose dealer went out of business, or whose unit was registered against the wrong dealer, or who bought from a marketplace seller who has since vanished. The hardware is fine. The support chain behind it is not.
What the warranty actually covers
Five years for most products, running from the date of purchase by the original end user, with a hard ceiling of 66 months from the date of Victron's own invoice.
That ceiling matters. If a unit sat in a warehouse for a year before you bought it, you do not get five years from your purchase date. You get whatever remains inside the 66-month window from when Victron invoiced it. Old stock quietly costs you warranty.
Batteries are shorter:
| Product | Warranty from your purchase | Ceiling from Victron's invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Most products | 5 years | 66 months |
| Lithium batteries | 3 years | 42 months |
| Lead-acid batteries | 2 years | 30 months |
Battery claims additionally require proof of correct battery usage, so keep your monitoring data and your charge settings.
During the warranty period Victron will repair, replace or partly credit the product at its own discretion. If a product is replaced, the warranty is not restarted. You keep the remainder of the original term, with a minimum of six months.
The warranty does not cover de-installation, transport or re-installation. On a unit wired into an RV, that labour can exceed the value of the part, and it is on you.
What voids it
The warranty is void if the unit has suffered physical damage or alteration, inside or out. Victron lists the improper-use exclusions explicitly:
- Reversed battery polarity
- Inadequate connection
- Mechanical shock or deformation
- Contact with liquid, or oxidation from condensation
- Use in an inappropriate environment, including dust, corrosive vapour, humidity, high temperature and biological infestation
- Breakage or damage from lightning
- Connection terminals and screws destroyed or overheated due to insufficient tightening
That last one deserves attention in an RV. A loose DC terminal on a high-current inverter connection heats up, and heat damage traced to an under-torqued lug is an excluded cause, not a manufacturing defect. Torque your terminals to the figure in the manual and re-check them after the first few weeks. It is the cheapest warranty protection available.
The dust and vibration exclusions are worth reading twice if your camper goes off pavement. Mount equipment where it stays dry and sealed, and do not treat an open equipment bay on a corrugated track as a benign environment.
The extended warranty, and why you have to plan ahead
Victron offers an additional five years, taking a five-year product to ten, for a 10 percent surcharge on the current net price.
Two constraints:
- It is purchased by Victron's direct customers, which means you arrange it through your dealer rather than with Victron.
- You must apply at the latest one year before the original term expires. Leave it to year five and the option is gone. Victron may also ask for proof the product was still working when the extension was bought.
If you are building a system you intend to keep for a decade, this is a decision to make in year one, not year four.
What this means when you buy
The warranty terms turn a few ordinary-looking purchase decisions into consequential ones.
Buy where support will still exist. Your claim goes back through your seller. A seller who cannot or will not process a claim leaves you with a five-year warranty you cannot use. This is the single strongest argument against buying Victron from an anonymous marketplace listing.
Keep the invoice, permanently. Your purchase date sets the start of the term and the invoice is what proves it. Owners posting about warranty problems are very often owners who cannot produce one. Scan it and store it with your system documentation.
Record the serial number when you install. Photograph the label before the unit disappears behind a panel, and keep it with the invoice.
Ask how old the stock is on a significant purchase. The 66-month ceiling means a heavily discounted unit that has been sitting for two years is carrying less warranty than a full-price one that has not.
Check the dealer directory. Victron publishes a Where to Buy directory of dealers and professionals at victronenergy.com. It is the straightforward way to see who is in the official channel before you spend several thousand dollars on a system.
Setting up so a claim is actually winnable
If a unit does fail, these are what make the difference between a smooth replacement and an argument:
- The invoice, showing the purchase date.
- The serial number, photographed at install.
- Torque records or at least a note that terminals were tightened to specification.
- Monitoring data for any battery claim.
- Photographs of the installation, showing the unit mounted in a suitable environment.
None of that takes more than a few minutes at install time, and all of it addresses the exact exclusions Victron lists.
A note on where we stand
We stock Victron across the range, from SmartShunt battery monitors to MultiPlus inverter chargers, and we ship from Upland, California.
If you are choosing between models, or working out what a claim would involve on something you already own, send us the model and the serial and we will tell you what we can see. If a question belongs with Victron or with the dealer you originally bought from, we will say so rather than guess.
