Will my F-150 Lightning's 7-pin charge my travel trailer's lithium battery?
It will top it up while you drive, if the circuit is live and you put a DC-DC charger in the way. On its own, it will not recharge a depleted lithium bank.
What the Lightning's charge pin delivers
Owners quoting Ford's workshop manual report that the auxiliary charge circuit, the black wire, is fed through a 30 amp fuse. The truck only powers it when:
- it detects a trailer with a battery connected,
- the ignition is in accessory or on, and
- the truck is not shedding loads.
On some trucks the circuit was switched off from the factory and had to be enabled by a dealer with Ford's diagnostic software. If you measure nothing on that pin with the truck on and the trailer plugged in, that is the first thing to ask about.
Why a lithium battery makes it worse
The circuit is a maintenance feed meant to keep a lead-acid battery topped up. A discharged lithium bank has very low internal resistance, so on a plain wire it pulls everything the circuit allows, for as long as it can. The result is the familiar "it charged for a while, then stopped": a blown 30 amp fuse or a hot connector.
The fix: a DC-DC charger with a set input limit
The Orion XS 12/12-50 lets you set its input current limit in the VictronConnect app. On a Lightning, set it to 20 to 25 amps, below the fuse, because the 7-pin's long factory wire and small contacts are not a cool short run. It then gives the battery a proper lithium charge profile instead of raw 12 volts.
If a fixed lower ceiling is fine, the Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated in its 12/12-30 size does the same job; the XS is adjustable and more efficient.
Wiring checks
- Ground: the return is the white wire. A corroded pin or trailer ground stud drops the voltage and the charger may decide the truck is off. A worn plug is cheap to replace with a 7-way plug and junction box.
- Wire gauge on the trailer side has to suit 20 amps over the frame length.
- A separate Anderson-style connector keeps the charge current off the small 7-pin contacts if you are rewiring anyway.
A SmartShunt on the trailer battery shows within an hour of driving whether the feed is live and what it is delivering. Treat the 7-pin as a top-up and let solar and shore power do the bulk of the charging.
