What size Victron MPPT do I need for four 550W solar panels?
Four 550 W panels is a 2200 W array. A charge controller's output current is roughly array watts divided by battery voltage, so the answer changes completely with your battery bank.
| Battery | Charge current at 2200 W | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| 48 V | about 46 A | One SmartSolar MPPT 150/45 (2600 W nominal at 48 V) |
| 24 V | about 92 A | More than a 150/45 (1300 W nominal at 24 V); a larger controller or two |
| 12 V | about 183 A | More than any single small controller; move the bank to 24 or 48 V |
Figures for the 150/45 come from Victron's datasheet: 650 W nominal on 12 V, 1300 W on 24 V, 1950 W on 36 V and 2600 W on 48 V, with up to 150 V of PV open-circuit voltage and 50 A of PV short-circuit current.
The 48 V case: one 150/45
At 48 V the SmartSolar MPPT 150/45 is rated above your array, so nothing is clipped. Then check the two limits that can damage it:
- Voltage. Large 550 W-class panels have a high open-circuit voltage, so string them with care. Add the Voc of the panels in each series string and correct it for your coldest morning. That total must stay under 150 V, which Victron calls the absolute maximum in the coldest conditions.
- Current. Add the short-circuit current of the parallel strings. It must stay at or under 50 A; Victron warns that a higher short-circuit current may damage the controller.
Read both numbers off your panel's label before you wire anything.
The 24 V case
On 24 V the 150/45 would clip at about 1300 W. Victron's datasheet says the controller limits input power when more is connected, so that is not damaging, but you would waste close to half the array at midday. Options:
- a larger SmartSolar from the 150/70 to 250/100 VE.Can range, checking its own datasheet for nominal power at 24 V and its Voc and Isc limits, or
- split the array across two controllers, each sized to its half and each inside its own limits.
The 12 V case
At 12 V, 2200 W means well over 150 A of charge current, a very large current for RV cables and bus bars. Builds this size usually move to 48 V. For 48 V systems with high-voltage strings, the SmartSolar MPPT RS is the other option we stock; confirm its input limits on Victron's datasheet against your strings.
