MultiPlus vs MultiPlus-II for 30-Amp and 50-Amp RV Service

Which Victron inverter charger suits your RV: model ranges, the two-AC-output difference, and what 50-amp split-phase service actually requires.

Both are inverter/chargers. Both do pure sine wave output, adaptive charging, PowerControl and PowerAssist, and both switch over from shore power fast enough that nothing in the coach notices.

The differences that matter for an RV are the model range, the second AC output, and what your shore power connection actually is.

Start with your shore power, not the inverter

This decides more than anything else about the specification.

30-amp RV service is 120 volts, single phase. One hot leg, 3,600 watts available. A single inverter/charger handles this directly.

50-amp RV service is 120/240 volts, split phase. Two hot legs, 12,000 watts available. This is where people get caught: a 50-amp connection is not simply a bigger 30-amp connection. It is a different electrical configuration, and a single 120 V inverter/charger cannot pass both legs through on its own.

For 50-amp service you are looking at either two units configured in split phase, or a single unit plus an autotransformer, depending on which loads actually need 240 V and whether you want both legs supported when off grid.

Check the datasheet for your specific model before committing. Paralleling, split-phase and three-phase capability varies by model within both ranges, and transfer switch current ratings do too. Those figures are per model and they are the ones that decide whether a given unit can carry your shore connection.

The model ranges

MultiPlus covers 800 VA, 1200 VA, 1600 VA, 2000 VA, 3000 VA, 5000 VA and 20 kW.

MultiPlus-II starts at 3000 and goes 4k, 4k5, 5000, 6k5, 8000, 10000 and 15000.

That difference matters more than any feature comparison for smaller rigs. If you want 1200 VA or 2000 VA for a van or a small camper, the MultiPlus range is where those sizes exist. The MultiPlus-II simply does not go below 3000.

What the MultiPlus-II adds

Two AC outputs. This is the headline difference. A second output lets you separate loads that should drop when you are off grid from loads that should always run from the inverter. In a motorhome that typically means the air conditioning and other heavy loads sit on the output that only lives when shore power is present.

ESS capability. Victron describes the MultiPlus-II as providing the isolation and redundancy required for energy storage system setups. That is a grid-tied use case rather than an RV one, and for most campers it is not a reason to choose it.

Remote on/off alongside a GX device. This is a genuine, practical difference. On the original MultiPlus, Quattro and EasySolar, you cannot use the remote on/off header together with a GX device; the factory wire link stays in place and you use a software assistant if you need a disable function. The MultiPlus-II, Quattro-II and EasySolar-II support remote on/off and a GX device at the same time.

If a physical master switch for the inverter matters to you, that alone can decide it.

A naming note that causes confusion in older forum threads: for a short period the MultiPlus-II was called the MultiGrid-II. Same product.

What both do

PowerControl stops you overloading a limited shore or generator supply. Charging current is reduced automatically rather than tripping the pedestal breaker.

PowerAssist goes further and boosts the incoming supply with power from the battery when demand exceeds what the shore connection can provide. On a 30-amp pedestal running an air conditioner and a microwave together, this is the feature that keeps you connected.

Both of these are worth more in day-to-day RV use than most of the specification sheet.

Uninterrupted transfer. When shore power disappears, the inverter takes over in under 20 milliseconds, which is fast enough that computers and electronics do not notice.

Parallel operation. Up to four Multis can run in parallel for higher output, with three-phase and split-phase operation available depending on model.

When to consider a Quattro instead

The Quattro and Quattro-II have two AC inputs with an automatic transfer between them.

For an RV that carries a generator, this is the cleaner answer. Shore power on one input, generator on the other, and the unit selects between them without a manual changeover switch. If you currently swap a plug or flip a transfer switch when you start the generator, a Quattro removes that step.

The things people get wrong

Sizing the inverter to the shore connection rather than to the loads. A 3000 VA unit on a 30-amp pedestal is a sensible pairing, because PowerAssist covers the peaks. Buying the largest unit that will physically fit costs money and battery capacity you may not need.

Forgetting the DC side. A 3000 VA inverter on 12 V draws serious current, and that decides cable size, fuse rating and battery capability. Work through our DC cable and fuse sizing guide before ordering, because on a long run the cable can cost more than you expect.

Assuming 50-amp service is just a bigger 30-amp. It is a different configuration. Get this settled before choosing hardware, not after.
