The trailer brakes have stopped working, or never worked, and the first instinct is to crawl under the trailer. That is often wrong. On the tow-vehicle forums the same three symptoms come up again and again, and all three are truck-side faults that no amount of trailer work will fix.
This guide is the truck side. It assumes the trailer's own brakes are sound, and it tells you how to prove that the truck is delivering what they need before you touch them.
What the 7-pin is supposed to deliver
A seven-way round connector carries seven circuits, and the two that matter for brakes are easy to confuse. Go by wire colour and function, because the pin numbering differs between the diagrams in circulation while the colours do not.

The single most useful thing to understand is that blue is not black. Blue only carries voltage when the controller sends it, which means when you brake or when you press the manual override. Black carries voltage whenever the truck's circuit is live. Testing blue with the brakes off and finding nothing is not a fault. Testing black and finding nothing is.
Symptom one: no power to the brakes at the 7-pin
The trailer plugs in, lights work, brakes do nothing.
Test at the truck socket with the trailer unplugged. Put a meter between the blue pin and the white pin. Press the controller's manual override. You should see voltage rise with the override. If you do:
- The truck is delivering. The fault is in the trailer plug, the trailer wiring, or the brakes, and it is time to go under the trailer after all.
If you see nothing on blue with the override pressed:
- Check the controller is powered. Most have a display or an LED. Dead controller means its own power feed: a fuse, or the connector behind the dash has backed off.
- Check the fuse for the brake output. On trucks with a factory tow package there is commonly a dedicated fuse for the trailer brake circuit, separate from the controller's own supply. It is the fuse people miss.
- Check the ground. Meter from the white pin to the truck chassis. A poor ground reads as low or erratic voltage on every other pin and produces the strangest symptoms of all.
- Check the connector itself. Corrosion in the socket, a pin pushed back, or a wire pulled out of the back of the socket. The socket lives at the back of the truck in the spray and it is the most-abused connector on the vehicle.
One trap from the forums: a ground wire landed on the breakaway circuit instead of the ground pin. Everything half works and the brakes do nothing. If the wiring has been touched by anyone, verify each wire against the table above rather than trusting the colour it appears to be connected to.
Symptom two: the controller says there is no trailer
The truck sees the lights but the controller insists nothing is hitched.
Controllers detect a trailer by sensing the load on the blue wire: the brake magnets present a low resistance, and the controller reads that resistance as "trailer connected." So "no trailer" means the controller cannot see the magnets through the blue circuit.
- Blue circuit open somewhere. Truck socket, plug, trailer wiring, or a brake magnet connection. Meter resistance across blue and white at the trailer plug: you should read a low resistance, a few ohms depending on how many magnets. Open circuit means a break.
- A magnet or its wiring has failed on the trailer side, though one failed magnet on a two-axle trailer usually still lets the controller see the others.
- Too little load for the controller to detect. Some controllers will not recognise a single small axle. Check the controller's minimum.
If the resistance at the trailer plug is right and the controller still says no trailer, the break is between the plug and the controller: socket, wiring, or the controller's own sensing.
Symptom three: voltage on the blue wire with no trailer attached
The controller shows brake output, or clicks, with nothing hitched. Forum threads describe exactly this and it alarms people.
A small voltage on blue with no load is often normal: the controller is sending a tiny sensing current to look for a trailer. What is not normal is full brake voltage on blue with no trailer, a controller that clicks continuously, or a controller that shows a connected trailer when there is none.
- Blue shorted to black or to a live circuit somewhere in the truck's harness. That puts constant power on the brake line, and if you then hitch up, the trailer brakes drag from the moment you plug in. Check for this before towing, not after a hub overheats.
- Water in the socket bridging pins. Dry it, clean it, and use a cover.
- A faulty controller holding output. Rare, but the fix is the controller.
If you find constant voltage on blue, do not hitch a trailer until it is resolved. Dragging brakes are a fire risk on a long descent.
Wire gauge, and why the black wire is not a charger
Owners on the tow-vehicle boards note that the 7-pin's wires are often only 16 AWG, and the factory auxiliary circuit is fused accordingly. It will trickle a trailer battery and it will keep a breakaway battery topped up. It will not charge a lithium house bank, and asking it to overheats the wire and blows the fuse.

When it really is the trailer
If the truck delivers modulated voltage on blue with the override, the trailer plug reads a sane resistance, and the brakes still do not work, the fault is on the trailer: the magnets, the drums, the adjustment, or the wiring between plug and axles. Making the truck side reliable
Three things stop most of this recurring:
- A proper distribution point for any added circuits. A busbar rather than a stack of ring terminals on a battery post, which is where the intermittent grounds come from.
- A resettable breaker on any circuit you add, such as a 50 A DC breaker, so a fault trips something you can reset rather than a fuse you have to find.
- A socket cover, and dielectric grease on the pins. The 7-pin socket fails from water and corrosion far more often than from anything electrical.
