Orion XS vs Orion-Tr Smart: Which DC-DC Charger for Your Camper

Compare Victron's Orion XS and Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC chargers on output, isolation and smart-alternator handling, with engine detection explained.

Both charge a house battery from your vehicle's alternator. Both work with lithium. Both configure over Bluetooth. The differences that actually decide it are output, isolation, and how each one copes with a modern smart alternator.

Choose the Orion XS when you want maximum charge rate from a single unit, or when you are dealing with a Euro 5 or Euro 6 smart alternator and want the most configurable engine detection.

Choose the Orion-Tr Smart isolated when the two electrical systems need separate chassis grounds, or when 400 W is enough and you would rather spend the difference elsewhere.

Model ranges

Orion XS comes in three: 12/12-50A, 12/12-70A, and the dual-voltage Orion XS 1400. Full rated power holds up to 40°C before thermal derating, giving 700 W, 1000 W and 1400 W respectively.

Victron notes the 700 W figure is the nominal level at a typical 14 V, calculated as voltage times current.

Orion-Tr Smart covers a much wider range of voltage combinations, up to 400 W. The isolated line includes 12/12-18, 12/12-30, 12/24-10, 12/24-15, 12/48-8, 24/12-20, 24/12-30, 24/24-12, 24/24-17, 24/48-8.5, 48/12-30, 48/24-16 and 48/48-8. The non-isolated line is narrower: 12/12-30, 12/24-15, 24/12-30 and 24/24-17.

If you need to cross voltages, 24 V to 12 V or 12 V to 48 V, the Orion-Tr Smart is the range that does it. The Orion XS is a 12 V to 12 V charger.

Isolation: when you actually need it

Galvanic isolation means the input and output can have separate chassis grounds, with no electrical path between them.

You want isolated when:

  • The two systems do not share a reliable common ground.
  • You are in a marine installation, where stray current between systems drives galvanic corrosion.
  • The vehicle chassis is the negative return for one system but not the other.
  • You are working on a vehicle where the manufacturer's electrical architecture makes a shared ground undesirable.

In a straightforward van or camper conversion where everything grounds to the same chassis, a non-isolated unit is usually fine and gives you more output for the money.

Smart alternators: the part that decides most purchases

Older vehicles ran a fixed alternator voltage and a simple voltage-sensing relay worked. Modern vehicles do not.

A Euro 5 or Euro 6 smart alternator varies its output to suit the starter battery and fuel economy targets, and it shuts down entirely when it decides no charge is needed. A DC-DC charger that simply watches for a voltage threshold will either fail to start, or worse, start when the engine is off and drain the starter battery.

How the Orion XS handles it

The Orion XS detects whether the engine is running by monitoring alternator voltage, with no extra switches or sensors. Victron's own description of why: smart alternators provide variable output voltage and shut down when not needed, so the charger only activates when the alternator is actually supplying power.

The Alternator Type setting offers three choices: Smart alternator, Regular alternator, or User defined. Picking the right one loads sensible thresholds:

Twelve-volt figures shown; double them for 24 V. All start and stop voltages are adjustable across 9 to 35 V if you need to tune for an unusual vehicle.

The lower thresholds in smart-alternator mode are the whole point: they accommodate the lower voltage a smart alternator produces, so the charger still recognises a running engine.

Two timers matter too. A delayed start delay of 120 seconds by default lets the starter battery recover before the house bank starts drawing. A shutdown delay of one minute stops the charger chattering on and off during brief voltage dips.

The adaptive behaviour is the clever part. Once running, the Orion XS reduces its own charge current to prevent the input voltage falling below the shutdown threshold. Rather than pulling the alternator down until it drops out, it backs off and keeps charging at whatever the vehicle can sustain.

There is also a separate input voltage lock-out, which in charger mode defaults to locking out at 12.5 V and restarting at 12.8 V. Victron recommends keeping at least 0.5 V between those two figures so the unit does not oscillate.

One warning worth repeating. Victron states that when forced charging is enabled, current will be drawn from the starter battery whether or not the engine is running. That setting exists for good reasons, but leaving it on unintentionally is a flat starter battery waiting to happen.

Wiring it to an ignition feed instead

If you would rather control the charger from the ignition than from voltage sensing, the Orion XS has L and H remote terminals rated ±70 V DC, with four documented options:

  1. A switch directly between L and H, where under 30 kΩ turns it on.
  2. A switch between battery positive and the H pin, where over 4 V turns it on. This is the ignition-wire method and it is the most common choice on a vehicle with an accessible switched feed.
  3. A switch between the L pin and ground, where under 6 V turns it on.
  4. BMS control into the H pin, typically from an allow-to-charge output.

That fourth option is worth noting: it lets the battery's own management system stop alternator charging, which is exactly what you want when the battery is too cold to accept charge.

The Orion-Tr Smart also has remote on/off and engine running detection. If you are using the remote input, the Orion-Tr isolated remote cable saves making up your own.

Sizing against the alternator, not the battery

A lithium house bank will accept everything you offer it. Your alternator will not necessarily survive supplying it.

Pick the DC-DC charger's current from what the alternator can deliver continuously, not from what the battery could take. A 50 A charger on a modest alternator that also has to run the vehicle is asking a lot, particularly in slow traffic on a hot day when alternator cooling is poor.

If you do not know your alternator's continuous rating, find it before choosing a model. It is the number that should drive this decision.

Cable sizing matters at these currents. For a 60 to 70 A installation Victron specifies 16 mm², which is 6 AWG, for runs under 5 metres, and 4 AWG for runs of 5 to 10 metres, with external fuse protection required. Charge profiles

The Orion XS runs a four-stage algorithm: bulk, absorption, float and storage, with adaptive absorption timing and temperature compensation. Storage is the stage that matters for a vehicle that sits between trips.

The Orion-Tr Smart runs an adaptive three-stage algorithm: bulk, absorption, float.

Both handle lead-acid and lithium. As always, set the voltages your battery manufacturer specifies rather than accepting a generic preset.

If neither fits

For vehicles where the alternator voltage swings too widely for a standard DC-DC charger, the Buck-Boost DC-DC converter can both step voltage up and down, holding a stable output across a wider input range.
