Electric drum brakes are simple: the brake controller in the tow vehicle sends a voltage down the 7-pin cable, an electromagnet in each drum pulls against the rotating armature surface, and that drag levers the shoes out against the drum. Because the whole system runs on a few amps through a plug that lives in mud, most brake complaints are electrical before they are mechanical. Work through this in order; the early steps are free and find most faults.
First, identify the symptom
- Weak everywhere. Trailer barely slows when you hit the manual override. Usually gain, voltage drop, or adjustment.
- Grabbing or locking. Brakes come on hard at low speed or lock a wheel. Usually gain too high, contaminated shoes, or a magnet problem on one side.
- Pulsing or surging. Brakes cycle on and off at steady pedal. Usually a bad ground or an out-of-round drum.
- One side only. Trailer pulls to one side under braking. Usually one magnet, one wire, or one adjustment.
- Nothing at all. No drag on manual override. Usually the plug, the breakaway switch, or a blown fuse in the tow vehicle.
Step 1: Controller gain and setup (free)
On an empty, straight road at about 25 mph, apply the controller's manual lever fully. The trailer brakes should almost lock. Increase gain until they do, then back off one step. Proportional controllers also need the correct boost or sensitivity level for the trailer weight. A grabbing trailer with a new controller is nearly always gain set for a heavier trailer.
Step 2: The 7-pin plug and the ground (free)
Pull the plug and look at both halves. Green corrosion on the brake pin or the ground pin is the single most common cause of weak and pulsing brakes. Clean with contact cleaner and a small brush. Then check that the trailer's ground actually returns through the plug: a trailer that grounds through the hitch ball works until the ball is greased, and then the brakes pulse.
With a meter, read voltage at the trailer-side brake pin while a helper works the manual override. It should rise smoothly to roughly the vehicle's battery voltage at full application; if it tops out several volts low, the drop is in the vehicle wiring or the plug. Step 3: Adjustment (30 minutes, a jack, and a brake spoon)
Electric drum brakes are adjusted by a star wheel at the bottom of the backing plate. Shoes that have worn in but were never adjusted have to travel further before they touch the drum, which feels like weak brakes and can also cause grabbing because the magnet has more free play.
Jack the wheel, spin it, turn the star wheel until the shoes drag, then back off until the wheel spins freely with a faint scrape. Do all wheels. Uneven adjustment is a classic cause of a trailer that pulls to one side. Step 4: Magnets
Pull the drum. The magnet is the round disc on the actuating arm. Check:
- Wear. A magnet worn through to the copper coil is finished. Uneven wear means the armature face on the drum is scored or the magnet is not sitting flat.
- Resistance. Disconnect the magnet's two wires and read resistance across them. Values are typically in the 3–4 ohm range, differing by brake size (10 in and 12 in brakes use different magnets). Your brake manufacturer's published spec is the one that decides. A reading near zero means a shorted coil; open means a broken one. Compare left to right; a mismatch of more than a few tenths of an ohm explains a pull.
- Current. With the drum on, apply the controller fully and read the total current at the plug. Divide by the number of brakes. Each magnet should draw roughly the same; a brake drawing much less has a bad magnet or wire.
A brake that grabs on one side often has a magnet with a groove worn into it that hooks the armature. Replace magnets in axle pairs. Step 5: Drums, shoes, and contamination
While the drum is off:
- Grease on the shoes. A failed inner seal lets bearing grease onto the linings. The brake grabs, then fades, and no adjustment helps. Replace the shoes, the seal, and repack the bearing; the bearing repack guide and the 12 in Timken bearing or 10 in bearing cover the running gear.
- Scored or out-of-round drum. Feel the inside surface. Deep grooves or a wavy surface cause pulsing. Machining a trailer drum is often more than a replacement; the brake drum hub, greased with two bearings ($99.00) is a bolt-on fix. Guide: brake drum hub replacement.
- Rust after storage. A trailer parked for months develops a rust layer on the drum that grabs for the first few stops. It usually clears; if it does not, the surface is pitted.
- Water crossings. Wet drums do almost nothing. Ride the brakes lightly after a crossing to dry them.
Step 6: Wiring on the trailer
Trailers that have been on corrugated roads chafe brake wires where they pass over the axle and through the frame. A wire grounding intermittently produces a brake that works, then does not, then locks. Follow the brake circuit from the plug to each backing plate looking for rubbed insulation, and check the connectors at the junction box. Use marine-grade heat-shrink butt connectors, not tape.
Step 7: Breakaway system
The breakaway switch sits in series with the trailer's brake circuit in some designs and in parallel in others. A corroded switch, a dead breakaway battery, or a charger that never charged it can affect the whole system. Test with the pin pulled: the wheels should lock solid. Parking brake and handbrake couplings
If the camper has a mechanical parking brake or a coupling with a handbrake, such as the Cruisemaster DO35 with handbrake, a cable that has stretched or a handbrake left partly on can drag one side and mimic a grabbing electric brake. Check the cable is slack with the lever released.
