The CURT 12V trailer breakaway kit is a critical last-resort safety system: if your trailer accidentally separates from the tow vehicle, the breakaway lanyard automatically activates the trailer's electric brakes, bringing it to a controlled stop and preventing a runaway. It's mandatory equipment for trailers with electric brakes in most Australian states and required under US federal towing safety regulations.
This kit includes a battery case with a built-in LED test light, so you can verify the system is charged and functional at a glance — no separate voltmeter needed. The universal, waterproof design fits all trailers with electric brakes, including Black Series HQ Series camper trailers.
How a trailer breakaway kit works
A breakaway switch connects to your tow vehicle by a pull-pin lanyard. If the trailer comes loose, the pin is yanked out, closing the circuit between the onboard breakaway battery and the trailer's electric brakes. The brakes lock on and hold the trailer until the battery drains — typically 15 minutes or more — giving you time to recover the trailer safely.
Installation
Mount the battery case to the trailer A-frame, wire the switch into the trailer's electric brake circuit and battery, then clip the lanyard to a solid point on the tow vehicle (not the safety chains). Press the LED test button to confirm a charged battery before every tow. Wiring is straightforward for anyone comfortable with basic 12V trailer wiring.
