Charging a Power Station While You Drive: EcoFlow, Bluetti, Jackery and Anker

Why the 12 V socket charges a power station so slowly, what EcoFlow and Bluetti alternator chargers do well, and when a fixed lithium battery wins.

A portable power station is the easy way into camping power: one box with a battery, an inverter and a row of outlets. Sooner or later, every owner asks the same question on the RAV4, Land Cruiser and van boards. How do I charge it while I drive?

There are three honest answers. The 12 volt socket works, but it is slow. The brands' own alternator chargers are fast and genuinely good. And past a certain point, a fixed lithium battery with a DC-DC charger beats any box.

Why the 12 V socket is so slow

The accessory socket is a small fused circuit meant for phone chargers and coolers, and the power stations cap what they take from it. EcoFlow's DELTA 2 manual lists car charging as 12 V or 24 V at a default of 8 amps. At 12.6 volts, that is about 100 watts.

A 1,000 watt-hour station charging at 100 watts needs more than 10 hours of driving to fill from empty, before losses. The makers say as much. EcoFlow says its 800 W Alternator Charger is 8 times faster than a vehicle's auxiliary outlet. Bluetti says its Charger 1 is 6 times faster than a cigarette-lighter charger.

Jackery and Anker publish car-input limits for each model, so check your manual. Two cautions apply to every brand:

  • Start the engine first. EcoFlow's manual says to plug in after the vehicle is started, so the station cannot leave you with a flat starter battery.
  • Do not try to beat the limit with a heavier lead. The socket's fuse and wiring are sized for the socket.

The brands' alternator chargers

EcoFlow and Bluetti both sell a box that wires straight to the vehicle battery with heavy cable and feeds the power station at high voltage. These are the figures on the makers' own pages as of September 2026.

What they do well:

  • Speed. EcoFlow claims 1 kWh in 1.3 hours. Bluetti claims a 1 kWh station filled by Charger 1 in 2.5 hours. That is a real day's power from an ordinary drive.
  • Nothing else to buy. No second battery and no separate inverter.
  • It stays portable. The station still comes out for the campsite, or a power cut at home.
  • They respect the alternator. EcoFlow says its output depends on the alternator's spare capacity rather than a fixed 800 W.
  • Reverse charging. The EcoFlow and the Charger 2 can push power back into a flat starter battery.

What to know first:

  • It is a real install, with heavy cable from the vehicle battery and the fuse or breaker at the battery end. It is the same job as fitting a DC-DC charger.
  • Check the alternator. 800 W at 12 V is about 67 amps before losses, and EcoFlow's input spec allows up to 76 A. A rule of thumb on the boards is no more than about a third of the alternator's rating continuously. Read yours off its label.

The alternative: a fixed lithium battery and an Orion XS

The other way is to install the power. A lithium battery lives in the vehicle or trailer, a DC-DC charger fills it from the alternator, and an inverter-charger makes 120 volts.

The Victron Orion XS is the DC-DC charger we would use. From Victron's specifications:

  • Up to 50 A, with input and output current each adjustable from 1 to 50 A.
  • 700 W continuous up to 40 °C, at up to 98.5% efficiency.
  • 9 to 17 V input, for 12 volt vehicles.
  • Engine shutdown detection by voltage that works with most conventional and smart alternators from the factory, adjustable in the VictronConnect app.

At 700 W, the Orion XS is in the same class as the power station chargers. Speed is not what separates the two approaches. Where the energy ends up is.

With an Orion XS, the charge goes into a battery you choose. An Eco-Worthy 12 V 280 Ah LiFePO4 holds about 3.5 kWh at nominal voltage, and a second one doubles it. You grow one battery at a time, with no brand lock-in.

We do not recommend running an Orion XS into a power station's solar input. The Orion is designed to charge a battery. If you are keeping the power station, buy its own alternator charger.

When a fixed battery and inverter-charger beats a power station

  • The loads are fixed and daily. A fridge, a roof fan, lights and Starlink run every day. Starlink's spec sheet puts the Standard kit at 75 to 100 W on average, or 1.8 to 2.4 kWh a day around the clock. A battery wired to those loads beats a box you keep unplugging.
  • You have outgrown the box. Once you are chaining expansion batteries, a fixed bank is easier to grow.
  • You want shore power handled for you. A MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120-50 is a 3,000 VA inverter with a 120 A charger and a 50 A transfer switch. At a campground it charges the bank and passes power through, and PowerAssist adds battery power when a small generator or weak pedestal cannot keep up.
  • You want solar. A SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 or 100/50 feeds the same bank.
  • You want to see what is happening. A SmartShunt gives a real state of charge, and a Cerbo GX puts the whole system on one screen.

The power station still wins if you rent, lease or change vehicles often, if the same battery backs up the house in a power cut, or if your loads are small: phones, lights, a CPAP, a weekend cooler.

Fusing, whichever you pick

Both approaches put a heavy cable on the vehicle battery, fused at the battery end. A MEGA fuse in a holder is the usual choice for an Orion XS feed. For a fixed lithium bank, the main battery fuse needs an interrupt rating that matches what lithium can deliver into a short, which is Class T territory. Which setup for which driver

  • Weekend car camping, small loads: the 12 V socket, and patience.
  • Road trips with a power station you like: the maker's alternator charger.
  • A van, truck camper or trailer running a fridge, fans and Starlink daily: a fixed lithium bank, an Orion XS and a MultiPlus-II.
  • Somewhere in between: start with the power station and its charger. When you catch yourself shopping for a second expansion battery, price out the fixed system.
