12V RV Water Systems Explained: Pumps, Tanks, Valves & Inlets

How a 12V off-road camper water system works - pump, tanks, mixing valve and city-water inlet - and how to choose or replace each part.

The water system is one of the simplest things to understand on an off-road camper - and one of the most common to need parts. Once you know how the pieces connect, choosing a replacement or upgrade is easy. Here's the whole system, start to finish.

How the system flows

Fresh water sits in the fresh-water tank. When you open a tap, the 12V water pump senses the pressure drop and switches on, pushing water through the lines to your faucets, shower and outdoor kitchen. A mixing valve blends hot and cold for a safe, comfortable temperature. When you're parked at a campground with mains water, a city-water inlet lets you bypass the pump and run on mains pressure. Waste drains into the grey and black tanks until you reach a dump station.

The 12V water pump

This is the heart of the system and the part most likely to need replacing. Pumps are rated by flow (GPM) and pressure (PSI) - a typical camper pump runs around 3.0 GPM at 55 PSI, which suits one or two taps at a time. Pumps are consumables; when yours gets noisy, cycles constantly or won't prime, it's time for a new one. Swapping a 12V water pump is a straightforward DIY job: match the fittings, connect two wires, done.

Tanks

Fresh, grey and black tanks are moulded from food-grade polyethylene. Capacity is your off-grid limit - bigger tanks mean longer between refills and dumps. Replacement tanks are sized to fit common camper bays.

Mixing valve, faucets and inlet

The mixing valve, faucets and city-water inlet are mostly about thread size and finish. A lead-free mixing valve keeps your hot water safe and comfortable; a quality outdoor faucet survives the elements; a flush-mount inlet connects cleanly to campground mains. All are easy swaps.

Choosing the right parts

Because these are largely universal components, fitment is about specification - GPM, PSI, thread size - not brand. That's why the same water parts fit Black Series, MDC, OPUS and most other off-road campers. Browse the water system collection, or the full off-road camper parts range, all shipping from the US.
