Black Series HQ12 vs HQ15 vs HQ17: Which Entry-Level Model Should You Buy?

Black Series' entry-level lineup covers the most popular price points in the off-road camper/RV market. They share the same platform philosophy but differ meaningfully in size, sleeping capacity, and equipment level.

HQ12: The One for Smaller Tow Vehicles

At roughly 18 feet overall, the HQ12 is towable by mid-size 4WDs, Jeep Wranglers, and smaller pickups that would struggle with the HQ17. Best for couples without kids who do technical trails where length matters.

Limitations: No bunk option, less kitchen bench space, ensuite is optional not standard.

HQ15: The Sweet Spot

The HQ15 is consistently the most popular Black Series model. It's long enough to be liveable for extended trips, short enough to not feel like you're towing a ship, and comes with a full ensuite standard.

Best for couples who camp 1–4 weeks at a time with mid-to-large 4WDs (80 Series, Tacoma, F-150, Ram 1500).

HQ17: When You Need More Room

Two feet longer than the HQ15, the HQ17 adds optional rear bunks (sleeps 4), a larger lounge and dinette, more overhead storage, and a larger garage.

Best for families with kids or full-timers spending 3+ months in the camper. Note: 24 feet overall is genuinely long — some campsite loops and tight tracks won't fit it.

How to Decide

  1. What can your tow vehicle handle? Start here. Buy the RV your vehicle can safely tow.
  2. More than 2 people? The HQ17 with bunks is worth the jump.
  3. How long are your trips? Short weekenders — HQ12. Month-long expeditions — HQ17.
  4. How technical are your tracks? Tight 4WD access — size down.
