RV Water System Troubleshooting: Pumps, Tanks & Sensors

Fix the most common RV water system problems - weak pump, no flow, cycling pump, bad tank readings - with a clear troubleshooting path and the parts to fix it. Ships from Upland, CA.

When the water stops flowing in a camper, it's usually one of a handful of culprits. This guide walks through the most common RV water system problems and how to fix them, plus the parts you'll need. Browse RV water systems & plumbing parts to get started.

Pump runs but weak or no flow

Check for a closed valve, empty fresh tank, kinked line, or clogged filter/strainer first. If those are clear, the 12V water pump itself may be worn or air-locked. Inspect the pump fittings for air leaks on the suction side.

Pump cycles on and off constantly

Short-cycling usually means trapped air, a small leak, or a failing pressure switch. Check connections and fittings, and bleed air from the lines. Persistent cycling points to the pump's internal switch.

Pump won't turn on

Confirm 12V power and the fuse/switch first, then the pump's wiring. If power reaches the pump and it's silent, the pump has likely failed.

Inaccurate tank level readings

Bad tank readings are often a fouled or failed level sensor. Clean or replace the water level sensor/gauge; residue on sensor contacts is a common cause of false readings.

Leaks

Trace drips back to fittings and connections - most leaks are a loose or failed fitting rather than the pipe itself. Replace suspect fittings and re-seal.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my water pump keep cycling when no tap is open?

Almost always a small leak or trapped air on the pressure side, or a worn pressure switch. Find the leak before replacing the pump.

How long do RV water pumps last?

Many years with care, but sediment, freezing, and dry-running shorten their life. Winterizing protects them - see our winterizing checklist.
