If you move every thirteen weeks for a contract, or every few weeks for a job, your trailer does not live the life the maintenance schedule assumes. A weekend owner tows twice a summer and winterizes in October. You might put eight thousand miles on the same axles in a year and never park anywhere long enough to call it a season.
That changes what breaks and when. The parts that fail on frequent movers wear by distance and heat cycles, not by weather: bearings, seals, brake shoes, tires, and every connection plugged and unplugged at both ends of a move. Here is a repeatable move-day routine built around those parts, plus what to carry when you do not know what town you land in next.
Set your intervals by miles, not by the calendar
Open your axle maker's manual and find the service interval for bearings and brakes. It is written as a distance or a time, whichever comes first. A weekend owner hits the time first. You hit the distance first, often twice in one year. So write the number down as miles, put your odometer next to it, and treat the date as irrelevant.
- Plan the repack around the contract, not around spring. A bearing service is a two-hour job in a driveway and a bad afternoon on a shoulder in August. Do it in the last week of an assignment, while you still know a shop.

If your axles have grease zerks, read how often to grease EZ-Lube axles before you assume the zerk replaces a repack. It does not.
The night before
This is the part most people skip, and it saves the day.
- Walk the tires cold. Set pressure to the number on the trailer's placard, not the sidewall. Check the DOT date code on each tire including the spare. Trailer tires age out before they wear out, and a frequent mover stacks miles on top of that. Our trailer tire buying guide covers load range and fitment.
- Pull one wheel cap and look. Not every move. Every few moves, and always after a hot run or a water crossing. You are looking for grease gone dark and thin, or a seal weeping onto the back of the drum. Replace wheel caps that no longer seat, and never reuse a cotter pin.
- Charge the breakaway battery. A breakaway battery that sits flat for a month is dead when you need it.
- Load heavy things low and forward of the axles. Your load changes every move because your life is in there. Sway that appears on move four and not move three is usually loading, not the hitch.
Hitch up, then check in this order
- Coupler latched and pinned, safety chains crossed, jack fully up.
- Breakaway cable to the truck frame, not to the ball or the chains. Then test it. Pull the pin, try to roll forward a few inches, feel the brakes hold, push the pin back. - Lights, all of them. Running, brake, both turns, reverse if wired, and the license plate lamp. Do it with a helper or a phone propped on the tailgate.
- The 7-pin itself. This is the most-replaced part on a trailer that moves constantly, because plugging and unplugging twice a week wears the contacts and road salt finishes them. - Brake controller gain. Reset it for this load. A controller set for a light trailer in June grabs when you load for a winter assignment.
The fifteen-mile stop
Pull off fifteen miles out, every single move. Touch the back of each hub with the back of your hand, or point an infrared thermometer at it. You are not looking for a temperature. You are looking for one hub noticeably hotter than the other three.
A hot hub is either a failing bearing or a brake that is not releasing. Both get worse fast and both are cheap to catch here. While you are stopped, retorque the lug nuts and walk the tires again.
Every fuel stop
Hand on each hub. Eyes on each sidewall. A glance under the trailer for anything hanging. Ninety seconds.
On arrival, before you relax
- Shore power first. Look at the pedestal before you plug in. If the receptacle is scorched or loose, do not use it. A 30 amp shore power cord set that lives outdoors at a different park every month is a consumable. Check both ends for heat discoloration and replace it when the blades pit.
- Look at the 12V system while it is fresh. If you run lithium, voltage tells you almost nothing about state of charge. - Confirm the main DC disconnect still works. A manual reset DC breaker you can reach and throw beats a fuse you have to dig for when something smells hot at 2am.
- Decide whether power is really your weak point. If half your assignments are at parks with bad pedestals or none at all, shore power versus generator versus solar and lithium is worth reading between contracts.
What to carry when the next town is unknown
The point of a spares kit is that it removes the question "is there a trailer shop here". Keep these in one box:
- A complete bearing and seal set for your hub size, plus grease and a fresh cotter pin or two. One 10 inch or 12 inch set is small and light.
- One spare brake drum hub if you tow long distances. It comes greased with bearings already in it, which turns a roadside bearing failure into a wheel swap instead of a tow.
- A pair of electric brake assemblies if an assignment takes you somewhere remote. Shoes and magnets wear together and you replace them in pairs anyway.
- A spare 7-way plug, spare bulbs or LED modules, fuses for the tow vehicle's trailer circuits, and dielectric grease.
- A torque wrench, a breaker bar, a jack rated for the trailer, and wheel chocks. A bottle jack from a car will not lift a loaded fifth wheel.

Keep a service log that survives you forgetting
Frequent movers lose track of maintenance because the trips blur together. Fix it with the least ceremony possible: a note on your phone or a notebook in the trailer, one line per event.

Record the odometer every time, because your interval is in miles. Photograph the trailer's VIN plate, the tire placard and the axle tag once, and keep those photos with the log. When you call a parts counter from a town you have never been to, those three photos answer most of the questions you will be asked. Keep the receipts too. A trailer maintained on a documented schedule sells for more and settles insurance arguments faster.
