Grease-Through Trailer Axles: How Often, and How To

How a grease-through spindle actually works, why pumping grease can blow a seal, and when it replaces a full bearing repack and when it does not.

Some trailer axles have a grease fitting in the end of the spindle, behind the dust cap. Pump grease in and it travels through a passage inside the spindle, emerges behind the rear bearing, and pushes forward through both bearings until fresh grease appears at the front.

It sounds like it removes the need to ever pull a hub. It does not, and misunderstanding that is how people damage brakes.

How the system actually works

The grease has to travel from the fitting, along a drilled passage, out behind the rear bearing, then forward through the cavity and the front bearing before it exits at the cap.

Two things follow from that path, and they are the whole story:

The rear bearing gets fresh grease first. That is deliberate, because the rear bearing carries more load and is the harder one to reach.

The only thing between the grease and your brakes is the rear grease seal. Push hard enough and grease goes past the seal instead of through the bearings. On a braked axle, that means grease on the brake shoes.

Doing it correctly

The method matters more here than on almost any other maintenance job.

  1. Jack the wheel clear of the ground and support the trailer properly. Not optional. The wheel has to turn.
  2. Remove the dust cap to expose the fitting. Some caps have a rubber plug instead.
  3. Wipe the fitting clean before connecting the gun. Grit pushed into a bearing does more harm than old grease.
  4. Rotate the wheel while you pump. This is the step people skip and it is the one that matters. Turning distributes grease evenly through both bearings and lets it find the path it is supposed to take rather than building pressure against the seal.
  5. Pump slowly. A powered grease gun can generate far more pressure than the seal will hold. A hand gun, used gently, is the right tool.
  6. Stop when fresh grease appears at the front. That is the signal the cavity has been flushed. Continuing past that point achieves nothing and risks the seal.
  7. Refit the cap and check the wheel still spins freely with no play.

If grease will not come through, stop. Something is blocked or the passage is not aligned. Forcing it is how seals let go. That is a hub-off job.

What it does not do

This is the part that matters most, and it is why the technique has a mixed reputation.

It does not let you inspect anything. Bearing condition is a visual assessment. Pitting, scoring, blue heat discoloration and a spun race are all invisible from outside. A bearing can be full of fresh grease and still be failing.

It does not remove contaminated grease reliably. It flushes the cavity, but water, grit or metal particles do not necessarily all leave through the front.

It does not check preload. Bearing preload drifts, and a wheel developing play will not tell you about it through a grease fitting.

It does not inspect your seal, your brakes or your drum, all of which are right there and are the things most likely to be quietly wrong.

So the honest position is that grease-through is a supplement to periodic hub-off service, not a replacement for it. Owners who treat it as a replacement are the ones who post about contaminated brake shoes.

How often

Follow your axle manufacturer's published interval. It varies by axle, by rating and by use, and your axle's own manual is the authority. Do not take a figure from a forum, including this one.

What is broadly agreed regardless of brand:

  • Grease-through more often than you inspect, and inspect on a schedule anyway.
  • Off-road, dusty and wet use shortens every interval. Corrugations load bearings far harder than highway miles, and water crossings are the fastest way to contaminate a hub.
  • After deep water, service sooner rather than waiting. Hot bearings drawing in cold water is a classic way to get moisture past a seal.
  • Before a long trip, not after.

Which grease

Use a quality high-temperature wheel bearing grease and stay with one product.

Mixing greases with different thickeners can cause the mix to separate or soften, which is worse than either grease alone. If you do not know what is in there, a full hub-off clean and repack is the only way to be certain.

Marine-grade grease is worth it if you launch a boat or cross water regularly, because it resists water washout.

When to stop greasing and pull the hub

Do a full hub-off service regardless of the grease schedule if you find any of:

  • Play at the wheel when rocked at twelve and six o'clock.
  • A hub noticeably hotter than the others after a drive.
  • Growling or rumbling that changes with road speed.
  • Grease on the inside of the wheel or the backing plate, which means the seal has already failed.
  • Dark, gritty or burnt-smelling grease coming out of the front.
  • No idea of the service history. If the trailer is new to you, look once and then you know.

Grease on the backing plate usually means contaminated shoes, and shoes cannot be cleaned back to reliable friction.

Doing the full job

When it is time to pull the hub, we have two guides depending on your trailer:

Parts you will want on hand: 10-inch or 12-inch Timken bearing kits, a fresh cotter pin for every hub, and a complete brake drum hub if a race has spun or a drum is scored past its limit.

Never reuse a cotter pin, and never run a new bearing on an old race.

If you are not sure whether your axle even has a grease-through spindle, pull a dust cap and look. A fitting in the centre of the spindle end is the tell. Send us a photo and your axle rating if you want it confirmed before ordering parts.
