Victron Energy RV Buying Guide: Every Product Line Explained, in the Order You Need Them

The Victron lineup for RVs in plain terms: MultiPlus, Quattro, MPPT, Orion, SmartShunt, Cerbo GX, BMS, Lynx, batteries. What each does, what to buy first.

Victron makes more than 200 products and the names do not explain themselves. This guide sorts the lineup into the six jobs an RV power system has to do, tells you which product does each job, and puts them in the order most people should buy them. Job 1: Know what the battery is doing (buy this first)

Before you spend on chargers or inverters, install a shunt-based monitor. Voltage alone cannot tell you the state of charge of a lithium battery, and most "dead battery" complaints turn out to be a bank that was never full.

Job 2: Charge from solar

Every Victron solar controller is rated as "max PV voltage / max charge current." A 100/30 accepts up to 100 V from the panels and delivers up to 30 A to the battery.

Job 3: Charge from the tow vehicle

Modern alternators and lithium batteries do not get along without a DC-DC charger between them. The charger limits current, converts to the right profile, and (in isolated models) separates the two grounds.

Job 4: Charge from shore power (and make AC when there is none)

You can do this with a separate charger and inverter, or with one inverter/charger. The inverter/charger is the better answer for any RV that runs 120 V loads off-grid.

Standalone chargers

  • Blue Smart IP65 120V ($52.50–$201.10): waterproof, 5–25 A, the standard RV maintainer.
  • Blue Smart IP22 ($125.97–$210.80): indoor, 1 or 3 outputs, higher current.
  • Smart IP43 ($339.00–$457.00): universal input, for larger banks without an inverter.

Three typical builds

Weekend trailer: SmartShunt, SmartSolar 100/30, Orion XS, Blue Smart IP65 charger, one SuperPack or Eco-Worthy battery. Roughly $600 in Victron electronics before the battery.
