How to Install a Victron MultiPlus Inverter/Charger (Wiring + Fusing)

Installing a Victron MultiPlus comes down to four connections: battery DC positive (through a correctly-sized fuse), battery negative, AC-in (shore or generator), and AC-out (your loads). A 12V/3000VA MultiPlus can draw up to about 300A on the DC side, so it needs heavy cable (typically 2/0–4/0 AWG) and a fuse in the 300–400A range mounted close to the battery. This guide walks the install step by step — but always follow the wiring values in your unit's Victron manual, and use a licensed electrician for AC mains where your local rules require it.

What you'll need

  • Your Victron MultiPlus (note the model — 12V/24V and the VA rating drive every other choice)
  • Battery cable sized to the unit — see our cable & fuse range
  • A DC fuse (Class-T or MEGA) rated to the unit, mounted within ~7 in / 18 cm of the battery positive
  • A busbar or Lynx distributor for clean positive/negative distribution
  • Crimp lugs, heat shrink, a torque wrench, and AC wiring to code

Step 1 — Mount & locate the unit

Mount the MultiPlus on a solid, vertical surface as close to the battery as practical (shorter DC cable = less voltage drop and lower cost). Leave clearance for cooling airflow, keep it dry, and don't install it in the same sealed compartment as lead-acid batteries that vent gas.

Step 2 — Size the DC cable & fuse

This is the step people get wrong. Size the DC cable to the unit's continuous current, and fuse every positive cable to protect it. Use these as starting ranges and confirm against your model's manual:

Step 3 — Wire the DC side

  1. Connect battery negative to the MultiPlus negative (via your busbar/Lynx).
  2. Connect battery positive through the fuse to the MultiPlus positive. Mount the fuse close to the battery so the whole cable is protected.
  3. Torque every lug to spec — loose DC connections at this current generate heat and fail.

Step 4 — Wire the AC side (in & out)

The MultiPlus has AC-in (shore power or generator) and AC-out (the circuits it powers). When shore power is present it passes through and charges the battery; when it's absent the unit inverts from the battery automatically.

Safety: AC mains wiring is governed by local electrical codes. If you're not qualified, have a licensed electrician complete and certify the AC connections. Never reverse AC-in and AC-out.

Step 5 — Ground, power up & configure

  1. Connect the chassis/earth ground per the manual.
  2. Double-check polarity and fuse rating before first power-up.
  3. Connect via Bluetooth or a Victron interface and set battery type, charge current and shore-current limit in VictronConnect.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Undersized DC cable — causes voltage drop, heat, and poor inverter performance.
  • Fuse too far from the battery — leaves the cable unprotected at the battery end.
  • AC-in / AC-out reversed — back-feeds the wrong circuit; double-check before power-up.
  • Loose lugs — high-current connections must be torqued to spec.
