The device shows a wi-fi connection. The signal is fine. And VRM still says your system is offline.
This is one of the most common Victron support questions, and it is almost always a network problem rather than a fault with the GX device. Work through these in order.
First, use Victron's own connectivity test
Victron gives a single test that separates "no internet" from "internet but something is blocking Victron."
From a device on the same network, open this address in a browser:

Now read the result carefully, because the meaning is the opposite of what you would expect:
- A "403 Forbidden" or "405 Method Not Allowed" error means everything is working. You have reached Victron's logging server and it has correctly refused a browser request. This is the result you want.
- A timeout, or any other browser error, means a firewall is blocking the connection. That is your actual problem.
Seeing an error page is success. It catches people out every time.
Second, check the settings that have to be right
Three things on the device itself.
VRM Portal access. Under Settings → VRM → VRM Portal, this must be set to Full or Read-only. If it is off, the device will not log and Remote Console will not work.
Connection status. The VRM Online Portal menu shows a connection status. You are looking for "No error." Anything else is the device telling you what it thinks is wrong, and it is worth reading before you start changing router settings.
Firmware. Update the GX device to the latest version and restart it, then check the status again. Victron's own troubleshooting sequence puts this before deeper investigation, because a surprising number of connectivity problems are already fixed in newer firmware.
Third, the campground wi-fi problem
This is the single most likely cause on an RV, and it is not really a Victron issue at all.
Most campground, marina and hotel networks use a captive portal: you connect, and the network holds all traffic until a human opens a browser and accepts terms or enters a code. Your phone handles this automatically because you open a browser without thinking about it.
A GX device has no browser and no way to accept those terms. It associates with the access point, gets an IP address, and reports a healthy wi-fi connection, while every packet it sends is being intercepted. From the device's point of view the wi-fi is fine. From VRM's point of view the system is offline.
Signs you are looking at a captive portal:
- Wi-fi shows connected with good signal, and an IP address is assigned.
- The connectivity test above times out rather than returning 403 or 405.
- The same device works immediately on a phone hotspot.
The fix is not to fight it. Use a cellular router or a phone hotspot for the GX device. A dedicated router that you control also solves the harder version of this problem, where the campground network changes its terms page periodically and re-blocks you.
If you must use campground wi-fi, a travel router that logs into the captive portal and then presents its own clean network to your equipment is the usual workaround.
Fourth, wired is more reliable than wireless
If the GX device can reach a router by cable, use a cable. Ethernet removes an entire category of problems at once: signal strength, band steering, wireless isolation, and re-authentication after a router reboot.
Many campers already have a router in a cabinet a short run from the electrical bay, and an RJ45 network cable is a cheaper fix than an afternoon of troubleshooting.
Client isolation is worth knowing about here too. Many guest networks deliberately stop devices talking to each other. That does not stop VRM logging, which goes outbound to the internet, but it does stop you reaching Remote Console from your phone on the same network, which can look like the same fault and is not.
Fifth, if it connects but data is patchy
A device that reaches VRM intermittently is a different problem from one that never connects.
Check the log interval. Under Settings → VRM → Log interval, a shorter interval means more frequent transmission and more data used. On a metered cellular connection, lengthening it reduces both data cost and the number of opportunities for a flaky link to drop a transmission.
Note that this does not make the system silent between intervals. State changes such as moving from charging to inverting, or bulk to float, and any alarms, still trigger extra transmissions.
Expect more traffic from bigger systems. Victron notes that systems with more connected products generate more traffic, and that frequent state transitions increase it further. A camper whose inverter cycles repeatedly on marginal shore power will use noticeably more data than one sitting still.
If you are on a limited plan, let the system run normally for several days and watch the data counters on your router before choosing a plan size.
A quick decision tree
- Test URL returns 403 or 405? Your network is fine. Go to step 3.
- Test URL times out? Something is blocking. Suspect a captive portal first, then a firewall. Try a phone hotspot to confirm.
- VRM portal access set to Full or Read-only? If not, fix that.
- Connection status says "No error"? If not, read what it says.
- Firmware current? Update and restart.
- Still failing on wi-fi but fine on hotspot? It is the network, not the device. Move to ethernet or a router you control.
When it is genuinely the hardware
Rare, but worth stating. If the device fails the test on a known-good network, fails on a phone hotspot, is on current firmware, and shows a connection error rather than "No error," then the problem is on the device side and it is time to raise it with whoever supplied it.
