Timbren's axle-less suspension sits under a lot of off-road teardrops and small expedition trailers, and it has one quirk that catches owners at service time: there is no axle tube to read a rating off, and the manufacturers' own knowledge bases tend to point you at a catalogue rather than a part number.
The good news is that the hubs use ordinary tapered roller bearings, and for the most common sizes the numbers are documented.

The 3,500 lb hub is the one most owners have, and it takes exactly the same bearing set as a standard 3,500 lb trailer axle: L68149 inner, L44649 outer, 10-19 seal. Our 10-inch Timken kit is that set, with races, seal and grease, and covers one hub.
The 2,000 lb hub is unusual. It runs the same L44649 bearing at both ends rather than a larger inner bearing. That is not a standard kit, so if you have the 2,000 lb suspension, order two L44649 cone and L44610 cup sets and a 10-9 seal per hub rather than a conventional inner-outer kit.
The rows that are not verified, and what to do instead
Timbren also makes heavier axle-less units, including the 3500HD and a 7,000 lb model, and manufacturers such as Off Grid Trailers fit them. We have not been able to confirm their bearing numbers from a Timbren listing, so they are deliberately not in the table. A wrong row here is a bearing that does not fit, and guessing is how that happens.
For those hubs, do what works on any trailer:
- Pull one hub and read the numbers off the bearings. Cone and cup part numbers are stamped on the bearings themselves. It takes twenty minutes and it is definitive.
- Measure the brake drum or hub diameter if the trailer has brakes. Ten-inch drums go with 3,500 lb bearing sets; twelve-inch with 5,200 to 7,000 lb sets. Our bearing sizes guide covers the measuring method.
- Send us the numbers, or a photo of the stamped bearing, and we will match the kit. For the 7,000 lb class the standard set is 25580 inner and 14125A outer with a 10-36 seal, which is our 12-inch Timken kit, but confirm yours before assuming it.
Why the numbers matter more on an axle-less trailer
Axle-less suspension is chosen for clearance and articulation, which means these trailers go where bearings get worked hardest: corrugations, water crossings, long descents. A bearing that is the wrong size, or a seal that does not match the hub, fails faster there than it would on a highway trailer.
The same service rules apply as on any trailer, with more urgency:
- Inspect yearly and before long trips, and immediately after any deep water crossing, when a hot hub drawing in cold water is the classic way to get moisture past a seal.
- Replace races with bearings. They are matched sets, and a new bearing on an old race is a short-lived repair.
- Never reuse a cotter pin. A fresh cotter pin for every hub, every time.
- Set preload properly: seat, back off, finger tight, back to the nearest pin hole. Our repack guide walks through it.
Which trailers this applies to
Timbren axle-less suspension is factory-fitted or common on a range of small off-road trailers, including Off Grid Trailers, Escapod and many home-built teardrops, and it is a frequent retrofit on older trailers being converted for off-road use. If your trailer has independent stub axles with a rubber spring on each side and no tube between the wheels, this is what you have.
Confirm the capacity from the trailer's compliance plate or the suspension's own label before ordering bearings, because the same trailer model can be built on different Timbren capacities across years.
