Why Your RV Battery Charger Matters More Than You Think
Most RV owners focus on solar and batteries when planning their off-grid power system, but the battery charger is often overlooked. A poor charger degrades batteries faster, shortens usable life, and can leave you with undercharged batteries at camp. For Black Series HQ owners who return home between trips, a quality 240V charger maintains battery health during storage and ensures you leave on a full charge.
The Victron Blue Smart IP67 is our recommended standalone 12V charger for AGM and lithium batteries in Black Series campers. Here's why.
Victron Blue Smart IP67: Overview
The Blue Smart IP67 is Victron's IP67-rated (dustproof, waterproof) intelligent battery charger with built-in Bluetooth. It connects to Victron's VictronConnect app, giving full monitoring and configuration from your phone. Available in 7A, 10A, 13A, 22A, and 25A variants at 12V.
| Model | Charge Current | Input Voltage | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Smart IP67 7A | 7A | 100–240V AC | Small AGM / maintenance charging |
| Blue Smart IP67 13A | 13A | 100–240V AC | Standard HQ AGM battery banks |
| Blue Smart IP67 25A | 25A | 100–240V AC | Larger or lithium banks, faster charging |
Key Features
Multi-Stage Charging Algorithm
The Blue Smart uses a 7-stage charging algorithm for AGM batteries (bulk, absorption, recondition, equalization, float, storage, and pulse maintenance). For lithium (LiFePO4) batteries, it uses a 2-stage CC/CV algorithm that respects lithium's chemistry correctly — critically, it does NOT continue pushing voltage after the absorption stage the way cheaper chargers do, which can damage lithium cells over time.
Battery Profile Selection
Via VictronConnect, you select the exact battery profile — AGM, gel, flooded, lithium, or custom. This matters: a charger running an AGM profile on a lithium battery will charge to 14.7V+ absorption, which is too high for LiFePO4 and risks triggering the BMS protection prematurely. The Blue Smart defaults correctly when the lithium profile is selected (14.2V absorption, then float).
Bluetooth + VictronConnect
Connect to the charger via VictronConnect on iOS or Android to see real-time charge current, voltage, state of charge (estimated), and which charge stage is active. You can change the battery profile, set charge current limits, and read historical data — all without physically accessing the charger. This is genuinely useful when the charger is in a tight compartment or mounted permanently.
IP67 Rating
IP67 means completely dustproof and waterproof to 1m submersion. In practice for a camper application, this means you can leave it connected in a wet storage bay, mount it on a chassis rail, or use it in any weather condition without concern. Most cheaper chargers are IP44 (splash resistant only).
Temperature Compensation
An optional temperature sensor (VE.Direct temperature sensor) plugs in for automatic charge voltage temperature compensation — lower voltage in heat, higher in cold. Without compensation, a charger set for 25°C ambient will over-charge slightly in summer and under-charge in winter. This is a meaningful feature for batteries stored in vehicle compartments that see wide temperature swings.
Blue Smart IP67 13A: The Right Size for Most HQ Campers
For the standard Black Series HQ setup (2 × 100Ah AGM = 200Ah total), the 13A Blue Smart is the most practical choice. Charge time from 50% (typical return-from-camping state) to full at 13A:
- 200Ah bank at 50% state of charge = 100Ah to recover
- At 13A with ~90% charger efficiency: approximately 8–9 hours to full
- In practice with absorption stage reducing current at end: 10–12 hours from 50% to true full
The 25A model halves this time but costs more and is most useful for owners who've upgraded to 200Ah+ lithium banks where faster charging matters more.
Victron Blue Smart vs Cheaper Alternatives
CTEK and NOCO are the main alternatives at comparable price points. Victron's advantages:
- Better lithium profile implementation — critical if you upgrade from AGM to lithium
- Bluetooth monitoring is more detailed than CTEK or NOCO's apps
- More current options (7A through 25A in one product line)
- Better integration with Victron solar and inverter components if you have a full Victron system
CTEK remains excellent for pure AGM maintenance charging and is slightly simpler to use. If you'll never go lithium and don't want the app, CTEK MXS 5.0 or 7.0 is a capable alternative at lower cost. But if there's any chance of a lithium upgrade, Victron's lithium profile handling makes it the better long-term choice.
Installation in a Black Series HQ
The most common installation is a fixed mount in the battery compartment or external storage bay, with a 240V inlet and direct connection to the battery terminals or the existing battery management wiring. Key installation notes:
- Fuse the positive cable at 25A (or matching the charger's max current + 20%)
- Use 6mm² (or heavier for 25A model) cable for DC output runs over 1 metre
- Mount with the cooling fins accessible — the IP67 body is passively cooled and needs airflow
- If integrating with a Victron system, the Blue Smart can share the battery bus with your MPPT and battery monitor — they don't interfere
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Blue Smart IP67 damage my lithium battery?
No — when configured with the lithium battery profile in VictronConnect, it uses the correct CC/CV algorithm and charge voltages for LiFePO4. It will not push float voltage into a lithium bank.
Can I leave it connected permanently?
Yes. In float mode (after full charge), the Blue Smart delivers only a maintenance charge to compensate for self-discharge. It's designed for permanent connection during storage.
Does it work with my existing HQ battery management system?
Yes. The Blue Smart connects directly to the battery terminals and works alongside any existing VSR or BMS. It doesn't require integration with your caravan's 12V system.
