“Which lithium battery?” is really two questions: do you want a drop-in battery with the brains sealed inside, or a system battery that hands management to an external BMS your inverter and chargers obey? Get that architecture question right and the brand choice mostly answers itself.

The architecture question: internal vs external BMS

Drop-in batteries (Battle Born, LiTime, Victron's own SuperPack) have an internal battery management system. If something goes wrong — low voltage, cold cell — the battery disconnects itself. Simple, but the rest of your system only finds out when the power cuts out.

Victron's LiFePO4 Smart and LiFePO4 NG batteries instead expose cell data over Bluetooth and are managed by an external Victron BMS (smallBMS, VE.Bus BMS, or Lynx Smart BMS). The BMS doesn't just cut power — it tells your MultiPlus to stop inverting, your chargers to back off, and your alternator protection to disengage before a hard disconnect. In an integrated Victron system, that coordination is the whole point.

Victron LiFePO4 Smart & NG: the system batteries

Available from 12.8V/50Ah up to 25.6V/200Ah (Smart) and 12.8V/100Ah to 51.2V/100Ah (NG), with per-cell monitoring in the VictronConnect app and support for series and parallel banks. Choose these when you're building around a MultiPlus/MultiPlus-II, Cerbo GX, and Victron charging — you get one app showing everything and a BMS that orchestrates the whole system. They require a Victron BMS (budget for it), and that's the honest trade-off: more components, more integration. If you want a sealed drop-in Victron, the Lithium SuperPack has the BMS built in.

Battle Born: the premium drop-in

Battle Born's BB10012 (100Ah, Group 31) is the best-known American drop-in: 31 lb, 100A continuous / 200A (3-second) peak from its internal BMS, a 3,000–5,000-cycle life expectancy, and a 10-year warranty backed by well-regarded Reno-based support. If you want a no-thinking-required lead-acid replacement and value phone support and the longest drop-in warranty in the business, Battle Born is the right buy — you pay a premium for it.

LiTime: the budget drop-in

LiTime's 12V 100Ah (Group 31 or Group 24) is the value pick: about 24 lb, built-in 100A BMS, 4,000+ rated cycles at full depth of discharge, IP65-rated case, 5-year warranty. For a trailer that needs affordable capacity — trolling motor, weekend rig, backup power — it's genuinely hard to argue with the price per amp-hour. The trade-offs are the shorter warranty, overseas manufacturing, and a 1280W continuous output ceiling per battery, which means big inverters need multiple batteries in parallel.

Bottom line

  • Building a full Victron system (MultiPlus-II, Cerbo, DC-DC/solar charging): Victron LiFePO4 Smart or NG + a Victron BMS — nothing else integrates as deeply, and ours is priced below the premium drop-ins.
  • Simple lead-acid swap with the best support and warranty: Battle Born.
  • Maximum amp-hours per dollar: LiTime.
  • Drop-in simplicity but staying in the Victron ecosystem: Lithium SuperPack.

FAQ

Can I run a 3000VA inverter on one 100Ah drop-in?

Not well — a 12V/3000VA inverter can pull over 200A at full load, beyond a single 100A-BMS drop-in. Plan on two or three drop-ins in parallel, or a Victron bank sized per our MultiPlus-II sizing guide.

Do Victron Smart batteries work without a Victron system?

They need a Victron BMS at minimum. If the rest of your gear is another brand, a drop-in is the simpler choice.

What about cold weather?

Lithium must not be charged below freezing. Managed Victron systems handle this via the BMS and temperature sensing; some drop-ins offer self-heating versions — check the specific model.
