Which Timken bearings fit a small 4-lug boat trailer hub?

Answered by RV Parts Giant · Upland, CA · September 30, 2026

Short answer: The lug count won't tell you. The spindle decides the bearings. A small 4-lug boat trailer is usually on a 2,000 lb axle with L44649 bearings at both ends, which we do not kit. If the inner cone reads L68149 instead, it is a 3,500 lb spindle and our 10-inch Timken kit fits. Read the stamped number before you order.

Lug count is a clue, not the answer

Wheel bearings are set by the spindle, not the wheel. Two trailers with the same lug count can have different spindles. For small boat and utility trailers, these are the two classes to tell apart:

Axle rating Spindle Inner bearing Outer bearing Usual hub Usual lugs
2,000 lb 1-1/16 in both ends, straight L44649 / L44610 L44649 / L44610 Idler, no brakes 4 or 5
3,500 lb 1-3/8 in inner, 1-1/16 in outer L68149 / L68111 L44649 / L44610 10-inch drum or idler 5 on 4-1/2 in

A 4-lug idler hub on a light boat trailer usually points to the 2,000 lb row. But many 2,000 lb axles are five-lug as well, so confirm it before you order.

The two checks that settle it

  1. Read the number off the old bearing. Every Timken cone has its number stamped on the face. L44649 at both ends means the 2,000 lb set. L68149 on the inside with L44649 on the outside means the 3,500 lb set. With the hub off, this takes a minute.
  2. Or measure the inner spindle. A straight 1-1/16 inch spindle is the 2,000 lb axle. A 1-3/8 inch shoulder stepping down to 1-1/16 at the outer end is the 3,500 lb axle. The two inner cones differ in bore, 1.0625 in for L44649 against 1.3775 in for L68149, so the wrong one will not go on.

If the axle plate is still legible, it gives the rating directly.

If it reads L44649 at both ends

This is the most common small boat trailer axle, and we do not currently offer a kit for it. Our 10-inch Timken kit has the same L44649 outer bearing, but its inner is the larger L68149, so it is the wrong kit for this hub. Tell us your old bearings read L44649 at both ends and we will say so plainly rather than sell you the wrong kit.

If the inner reads L68149

That is the 3,500 lb spindle, and the 10-inch kit is the right set. It comes with matched inner and outer cones, their races, the seal and grease for one hub, so a single-axle trailer needs two. Do both hubs on the axle at the same time.

Boat trailer habits that protect new bearings

  • Let the hubs cool before launching. A warm hub pulls water past the seal as it cools.
  • Inspect yearly, whatever the mileage. Boat trailer bearings fail from water, not miles.
  • Don't over-grease through a bearing protector. It forces grease past the inner seal.
  • Set the preload. Seat the bearings, back the nut off, snug it finger tight, and fit a new cotter pin at the nearest slot.

Send a photo of the stamped number or the axle plate and we will confirm the set before you order. Everything ships from Upland, California.
