What fuse goes in a Victron Lynx Shunt VE.Can, and can I use a different size?
The Lynx Shunt VE.Can is both the battery monitor and the home of the system's main fuse. The 325 A fuse in the box photos is the one Victron stocks, not the only size it takes.
What fits
From Victron's Lynx Shunt VE.Can manual (sections 3.2 and 5.2.2):
- CNN fuse. Both the M8 and M10 versions take a CNN main fuse. Victron stocks the 325 A / 80 V CNN, part CIP140325000, and notes that CNN fuses are available from 35 A up to 800 A.
- Mega fuse. Either version can take a Mega fuse on its M6 bolts instead.
- M10 only: it also accepts an ANL fuse, and it ships with a fuse dummy, a piece of busbar you fit in place of the fuse when the main fuse sits outside the shunt, which Victron suggests for larger systems.
The shunt itself is rated 1000 A continuous at 12, 24 or 48 V. That is the module's limit, not a fuse recommendation.
How to pick the rating
Victron's rule is to match the fuse to the maximum voltage and current the fused circuit can see, and to size the cable for that same current. Two checks that catch most mistakes:
- Voltage. The CNN we stock is rated 80 V DC, which covers 12, 24 and 48 V systems.
- Lowest-rated module. The manual warns that the total of all fuse values should not exceed the current rating of the lowest-rated Lynx module in the chain. If you add a Lynx Distributor, its fuses count too.
If your bank needs a higher interrupt rating than a CNN gives, put a Class T fuse outside the shunt. On the M10 version, fit the supplied dummy in the shunt; the Lynx Class-T Power In gives that fuse a home on the same busbar. Note that M8 and M10 Lynx modules cannot be joined directly.
When the fuse blows
With a fuse fitted, the shunt monitors it. A blown fuse turns the power LED red and sends an alarm to the GX device, and the alarm relay can be set to react to it. If a new fuse blows straight away, Victron's troubleshooting is: look for a short circuit, a faulty load, or a circuit drawing more than the fuse rating. Remember the system goes live the moment the fuse is placed if the positive bus is already powered.
We stock the Lynx Shunt VE.Can and the CNN 325 A fuse in Upland, California.
