This guide is for 12 V compressor refrigerators, the type fitted to Black Series HQ campers, most off-road trailers, and vans: Dometic CoolMatic, Isotherm, Vitrifrigo, and the many units built around a Secop (formerly Danfoss) BD-series compressor. Compressor fridges fail to cool for one of five reasons, and they are listed here in the order you should check them because the first two account for most calls we get.
1. Voltage at the fridge, under load
A compressor fridge does not care what the battery monitor says. It cares about the voltage at its own terminals while the compressor is trying to start. The controller has a low-voltage cutoff, commonly around 10.4 V on a 12 V system in the default setting; your model's manual gives the exact figure, and if voltage dips below that during compressor start, the controller shuts down, waits, and tries again. From the outside it looks like a fridge that "runs sometimes" and slowly warms.
Test: with a multimeter on the fridge's DC input terminals (not the battery), watch the reading as the compressor starts. A drop of more than about half a volt between battery and fridge means the wiring is undersized, too long, or has a bad connection.
Causes and fixes:
- Thin factory wire on a long run. Many builders use 14 or 16 AWG to a fridge that draws 5–8 A at start. Rewire with 10 AWG on runs over about 15 ft; the 12 V voltage drop guide has the table.
- A corroded connector, often a cigarette-style plug. Replace with a hardwired connection through a fused 12 V socket or, better, a direct fused feed.
- A tired battery that sags under any load. Check state of charge with a SmartShunt; a lead-acid bank below 50% will do this all afternoon.
- A BatteryProtect or control panel low-voltage disconnect set too high for the fridge circuit.
2. Condenser airflow
The compressor moves heat from inside the box to a condenser at the back, and something has to carry that heat away. If it cannot, the fridge runs continuously, the compressor gets hot, and cooling falls off as ambient temperature climbs. This is the classic "fine in the morning, warm by 4 p.m." pattern.
Check:
- The exterior vent cover and the space behind the fridge for dust, insulation that has slumped, or a stored item blocking the gap.
- The fridge vent fan ($60.00). Put your hand near it while the compressor runs; if there is no airflow, replace it. Units without a fan benefit from adding one, wired to come on with the compressor or through a thermal switch.
- Sun on the fridge wall. A reflective window insulation panel on the adjacent window, or simply parking with that side shaded, makes a measurable difference.
3. Controller flash codes
Most Secop/Danfoss-based controllers have an LED that blinks a fault code when the compressor will not run. Count the flashes in each group:

4. Thermostat, settings, and the box itself
If voltage is good, airflow is good, and there is no fault code, the compressor is probably running and the problem is what happens to the cold.
- Thermostat setting. Many fridges ship in an eco or "battery saver" mode that limits compressor speed. In hot weather, switch to the normal or high-performance setting. Confirm the thermostat knob or app setting has not been knocked.
- Door seal. Close the door on a strip of paper; it should resist a gentle pull all the way around. A seal that has come unglued at a corner lets warm humid air in continuously. If the door itself is damaged, Dometic fridge handles and door shelves are available.
- Ice on the evaporator. A thick frost layer insulates the plate. Defrost fully and check the seal, which is the usual cause.
- Loading. A fridge packed solid with warm groceries at the start of a trip can take most of a day to catch up. Pre-cool on shore power.
- Level. Compressor fridges tolerate angles far better than absorption units, but continuous operation well past 30 degrees of tilt can affect compressor lubrication. Check the tilt limit your model states.
5. Compressor and refrigerant
If the compressor starts, runs, the condenser gets warm, but the evaporator plate never gets cold, the system has lost refrigerant or the compressor has failed internally. These are sealed systems and rarely economical to repair on a camper fridge. Run a dedicated 10 AWG fused feed to the fridge, fit a condenser fan if there is none, keep the vent clear, and keep the battery above 50% (lead-acid) or above the BMS low-temperature and low-voltage limits (lithium).
