Bilstein 5100 or 5160 for a lifted 4-door Jeep Wrangler JL?

Answered by RV Parts Giant · Upland, CA · October 5, 2026

Short answer: Both come in lengths for the same three lift ranges on a 2018-on 4-door JL: 0-1.5, 2-3 and 3-4.5 inches. The 5100 is a single-tube shock sold as one part per axle position; the 5160 adds a remote reservoir and its fronts are sold as separate left and right parts. Pick the range that matches your lift, then pick the series.

Start with the lift, not the series. Bilstein makes both the B8 5100 and the B8 5160 in three lengths for the 2018-on 4-door JL, and a shock made for the wrong lift range will top out or bottom out.

Part numbers by lift (4-door JL, 2018-on)

Lift 5100 front 5100 rear 5160 front (L / R) 5160 rear
0-1.5 in 33-316314 33-316321 — —
2-3 in 33-292625 33-292632 25-329865 / 25-329872 25-329858
3-4.5 in 24-310635 33-292977 25-329902 / 25-329919 25-329926

For the 3-4.5 inch rears, Bilstein's notes say the Jeep needs appropriate bump-stop extensions.

What the 5160 adds

The 5160 is the 5100's monotube design with a remote reservoir, so it carries more oil and stays cooler over long washboard or rough stretches. Its fronts are side-specific because the reservoir mounts differ left and right, which is why you order a left and a right instead of two of the same part. For mostly pavement with some trail days, owners generally find the 5100 enough; for long rough miles or towing off pavement, the 5160 is the step up.

Lift kits

If you have not lifted yet, Bilstein's B8 5100 lift kits for the 4-door JL (53-291417 without winch, 53-291431 with winch) list 1.5 inches of lift on a Rubicon and 2.5 inches on other trims.

The front steering stabilizer 33-292984 is listed for the JL. Check any combination in the Bilstein Shock Fitment Finder.
