Through-the-floor or multi-directional urine diverter: which Nature's Head should I buy?

Short answer: Both route urine to an outside tank instead of the 2.2-gallon bottle. Pick through-the-floor when the tank sits directly under the toilet and you can drill a 1-3/4" hole. Pick multi-directional when the hose has to run sideways or behind the toilet: it uses a 1/2" NPT brass swivel turning 360°, with hose included. Neither diverter kit is listed for the Weekender.

The standard Nature's Head stores urine in a 2.2-gallon bottle you empty by hand. Both diverter versions replace that bottle with a fitting that sends urine to a tank or approved drain. Solids stay in the composting chamber either way, and the toilet body is the same: 23 lbs, 21"H x 20"W x 19"D, about 60–80 solid uses between emptying.

The difference is where the hose goes

Through-the-floor (NH-TTF-UD) Multi-directional (NH-UD-Toilet)
Outlet Straight down from the urine spout through the floor Brass swivel fitting turning 360°, routes any direction
Connection Flange; plumbing to your tank is user-supplied 1/2" NPT brass swivel, quick-connect hose
Hose included No 5 ft polyurethane hose
Floor hole 1-3/4" hole saw required (not included); template included None if the hose runs along the side of the toilet to the back; routing it straight down needs a floor hole
Finish Cover included to hide the plumbing Removable kit for cleaning and compost changes
Traps 90° or in-line P-trap, both 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC Not needed for the hose run

Choose through-the-floor if

  • The grey tank or a holding tank sits directly below the toilet position.
  • You can drill the floor and plumb below it with PVC. Add the 90 Degree P-Trap where the line turns, or the In Line P-Trap for a straight run; both reduce odor coming back up the drain line.

Choose multi-directional if

  • The tank is off to one side, or the floor cannot be drilled (a van over a frame rail, a boat sole, a tiled bathroom).
  • You want to run hose along the wall. Extra hose is sold by the foot (1/2" LLDPE) and pushes into the same quick-connect swivel.

Already own a standard Nature's Head?

You do not need a new toilet. The Through-the-Floor Urine Diverter Kit (NH-TTF-Kit) swaps in for the standard bottle and holder. The Multi-Directional Urine Diverter Kit (NH-Diverter-Kit) does the same for the multi-directional setup. Nature's Head lists the multi-directional kit as fitting the original toilets only, not the Weekender. Neither listing names the Weekender as a fit.

Check before you plumb

Only route urine into a tank or system that is approved for it where you camp or live. The toilet still needs its vent and 12V fan connected; the diverter changes only the liquids side.

For the plumbing itself (the 1-3/4" floor hole, 3/4" PVC, P-traps and the push-lock hose fitting), see how to install a Nature's Head composting toilet.
