These two categories overlap far more than they used to, so the old answer — "a UPS is for switchover, a power station is for runtime" — is only half true now.
The overlap
Several stations we stock are specified with UPS switchover. Our Elite 200 V2 listing states a switchover of 15 milliseconds or less alongside 2,073.6Wh of LiFePO4 and 2,600W of AC output. The Elite 100 V2 listing states a 10ms switchover with 1,024Wh and 1,800W. Even the small Elite 30 V2 is listed with a 10ms UPS and a 980W bypass, plus a standby draw of 4.5W, which matters if the thing is going to sit plugged in for months waiting for an outage.
So a station is not merely a battery with a socket. For a router, a modem, a CPAP or a fridge, those switchover figures are in the same territory as a consumer UPS, with vastly more runtime behind them.
Where the dedicated UPS still wins
Buy the purpose-built unit when the job is to protect one appliance, automatically, with nobody in the house. The decision rule
Ask three questions.
- How many things, and for how long? One device for minutes, so you can shut it down gracefully, is UPS territory. A fridge for a day or a weekend is station territory, and there you size in watt-hours, not in VA.
- Does it need to be unattended? A dedicated fridge UPS is always armed. A station only protects what happens to be plugged into it.
- Does the battery need to leave the building? If the same pack has to run a campsite, a tailgate or a job site, only the station can do both jobs.
The honest caveat
Check your sensitive equipment's tolerance against the published switchover time rather than assuming. A desktop PC or a sump pump controller can be fussier than a fridge. And note the distinction between switchover time and bypass rating — the bypass figure is the load the unit can pass through from the wall, which is not the same as what it can run from its own battery.
