BLUETTI as Backup Power: UPS Times and RV Use

BLUETTI's published UPS switchover times for the main stations we carry, the settings that matter for fridges and CPAPs, and three ways to use a BLUETTI as RV or home backup.

Most BLUETTI stations can sit between shore power and your devices and take over when the power drops. BLUETTI calls this UPS mode. In an RV, that covers a pedestal that trips, a generator that runs out of fuel, or the moment you unplug to leave a campground. At home, it covers an outage. How well it works depends on three things: how fast the station switches over, what you plug into it, and which settings you leave on. This guide covers each one, with BLUETTI's published figures for the main stations we carry.

Switchover time by model

Switchover time is the gap between losing input power and the station's inverter taking the load. A fridge, a fan or a light will not notice 20 ms. A desktop computer might.

Model UPS switchover (BLUETTI) Notes
FridgePower under 10 ms Built as a fridge backup. 4W idle draw
Premium 100 V2 10 ms or less (spec table) "Power Memory" mode restores outputs when grid power returns
Elite 320 10 ms (our listing) Pass-through charging
Premium 200 V2 within 15 ms Four UPS modes: standard, time control, PV priority, custom
Apex 300 0 ms or 20 ms, per BLUETTI's page Can enable UPS for a whole parallel system through Hub A1
Pioneer Na 20 ms or less BLUETTI's manual: not for data servers or workstations
RV5 system within 20 ms Switches the whole coach when shore or generator power is lost

BLUETTI's AC200P L page reuses FAQ answers written for the older AC200L. We have left its switchover time out rather than quote a figure that may belong to another model.

The setting that catches fridge owners out

BLUETTI's FridgePower has an ECO mode. BLUETTI's FAQ says it switches off AC output after 4 hours if the load stays under a threshold (the manual lets you set 1 to 4 hours, and ECO is off by default). A fridge between compressor cycles can look like "no load," so BLUETTI says to turn ECO mode off for refrigerators, freezers, pumps, aquariums and routers. Check the same thing on any station you use as a fridge backup. If an auto-off feature is on, the station will eventually cut a load that cycles.

Three ways to use a BLUETTI as backup in an RV

1. Back up the loads you care about

Plug the station into a shore-powered outlet, then plug the fridge, CPAP or router into the station. All of the portable stations above support pass-through charging. It keeps itself topped up from shore power and takes over when that power drops. This is the simplest setup, and it needs no wiring. For a CPAP on its own, BLUETTI's X60 is a 614Wh pack, and BLUETTI says it is compatible with 90% of CPAP machines.

2. Feed the whole coach from a station

This is the route most people mean by "power my RV." It is also where most mix-ups happen. Two of the stations we carry have RV outlets built in. BLUETTI's spec sheet for the AC200P L lists a 120V/30A NEMA TT-30 outlet alongside four 120V/20A outlets, 2,400W in total, plus a 48V/8A "RV outlet" on the DC side. The Apex 300 sheet lists a NEMA TT-30R and a NEMA 14-50R (120/240V, 50A) alongside four 20A outlets, 3,840W in total. Either way, what you get is limited by the station's inverter (2,400W, or 3,840W shared across every Apex 300 outlet), not by the outlet's 30 or 50 amp rating. The other stations we carry have standard household outlets, so feeding a 30 amp inlet from them means an adapter, and a load you manage yourself. Read which power station can run a 30 amp RV before you plug a station into your shore cord, and remember that the coach's converter will try to charge your house battery from the station.

3. Install a fixed system

The RV5 replaces the RV's converter, inverter and transfer switch. BLUETTI says it passes up to 6,000W of load through a 50A bypass while you are on shore power, and switches to battery within 20 ms if that power is lost. The Epad screen includes a generator auto-start port. This is the setup for a full-time rig. See RV5 vs a Victron build and RV5 kit vs parts.

How long will it hold?

Runtime = rated Wh × 0.85 ÷ load in watts. The 0.85 is our planning assumption for inverter and standby losses. BLUETTI's own formulas use similar factors. On a steady 100W load:

Station Rated Hours at 100W (×0.85)
Premium 100 V2 1,024Wh about 8.7
FridgePower 2,016Wh about 17
Premium 200 V2 2,073.6Wh about 17.6
Apex 300 2,764.8Wh about 23.5
Elite 320 3,200Wh about 27.2
FridgePower + 3 BlueCell 200 8,064Wh about 68.5

For a fridge, BLUETTI quotes about 21.6 hours on the FridgePower for a fridge that uses 2 kWh a day, under its lab conditions. Standby draw matters over a long outage. BLUETTI lists 4W idle on the FridgePower and 1.5W no-load on the Pioneer Na. If you want more hours, see which expansion battery fits which BLUETTI.

Recharging between outages

BLUETTI quotes 80% in 45 minutes from AC on the Premium 100 V2, and 80% in 35 minutes on the Pioneer Na with AC and solar combined. The FridgePower can use local weather data to start fast-charging before a storm. The Apex 300 has an "Extreme Weather Alert" mode that switches to emergency backup when a warning is issued. BLUETTI also says the Apex 300 can black-start from solar after it has fully drained. For a cold storage lot, the Pioneer Na's sodium-ion cells charge down to 5°F, according to BLUETTI.

Home backup too

The same stations work in a house. BLUETTI says the FridgePower fits beside a fridge or mounts on a wall, at 75 mm thick. It also says the Apex 300 can connect to a home through a transfer switch. Wiring into a home panel is a job for a licensed electrician. Our general answer on a power station or a UPS for backup power compares the two approaches.

FAQ

Will a BLUETTI keep my CPAP running if shore power drops?

Every model above lists a UPS function. BLUETTI names CPAP machines as a use case for the Premium 100 V2's 10 ms switchover and for the X60.

Does UPS mode wear out the battery?

The Premium 200 V2's standard UPS mode holds the battery at 100%. If you would rather not do that, BLUETTI also offers time-control and PV-priority modes.

Can the station power the RV and charge from it at the same time?

Not from the same circuit. If the station's input is plugged into an outlet that the station itself feeds, it creates a loop. BLUETTI warns against plugging a unit's AC charging cable into its own AC outlets.

Which is best as a fridge-only backup?

The FridgePower, because it was designed for that job. Found it cheaper? We'll beat it.
