Why does my wireless trailer camera cut out or flicker with a newer truck's 7-way plug?

Answered by RV Parts Giant · Upland, CA · October 26, 2026

Short answer: Newer trucks use variable-voltage systems that don't always give a trailer the steady 12V a wireless camera needs. Visionworks' flyer lists 2019 and newer Chevy/GMC and 2021 and newer Ford and Dodge. The VW7PMA plugs in at the 7-way and gives the trailer a constant 12V. Check the ground and connectors first.

The camera on the back of a trailer is often powered through the tow vehicle's 7-way plug. Older trucks put a steady 12V on those pins. Many newer trucks use variable-voltage systems that don't always give a trailer the steady power a wireless camera needs. The camera may then reboot, flicker or lose the picture while you drive, even though the trailer's lights look fine.

Which trucks

Visionworks' flyer for its 7-way power management adapter lists:

Tow vehicle Model years
Chevy / GMC 2019 and newer
Ford 2021 and newer
Dodge 2021 and newer

If your camera worked behind an older truck and started acting up after you changed trucks, this is the first suspect.

The fix

The Visionworks VW7PMA is a plug-and-play heavy-duty adapter that goes in at the 7-way and provides steady 12V to the trailer. It isn't limited to Visionworks: the listing says it works with other wireless camera brands too. Visionworks also says it powers the marker lights and cameras when the RV isn't connected to a tow vehicle.

Rule out the usual causes first

Our backup camera guide lists the causes that look the same on screen:

  1. Weak ground. A camera feed with a poor ground flickers with every bump. Check the ground at the camera and at the trailer frame.
  2. Loose or corroded connectors. Wiggle the 7-way plug and the camera connector while someone watches the monitor. If the picture changes, fix the connection before you buy anything.
  3. Damaged cable. Look for pinched or chafed wiring where it runs along the frame.

If all three check out and the problem only shows up behind the newer truck, it's the variable-voltage supply.

If there's no usable power at the back

For a camera that only needs to run for a drive, the VWMOBAT rechargeable battery pack runs a Visionworks wireless camera with no wiring at all. It lasts 6 to 8 hours per charge and comes with AC/DC and 12V chargers and a magnet.
