Renogy Lithium Batteries Compared: Core, Pro, S1, Rego

A side-by-side comparison of the Renogy 12V LiFePO4 batteries we stock, from the Core Series 50Ah to the Pro S1 240Ah, and how to pick one by space, cold weather and system voltage.

Renogy sells several 12V LiFePO4 lines that look alike on paper: Core, Core Mini, Pro, Pro S1 and the slim Rego. They differ in case size, cold-weather charging, Bluetooth, discharge current and how they can be wired together. This guide compares the Renogy batteries we stock using Renogy's own specs, then helps you pick one.

Figures are from Renogy's product pages and user manuals. Cold charging matters most: a "low-temperature cut-off" battery protects itself by refusing to charge below freezing, while a self-heating battery warms itself and then charges.

How much energy you actually get

For planning, we count 90% of a LiFePO4 battery's rated capacity as usable: Ah x 12.8V x 0.9. That is our planning assumption, not a Renogy rating.

Capacity Usable Wh (planning) Example
50Ah 576 Wh Core Series 50Ah
100Ah 1,152 Wh Core Mini 100Ah, Pro 100Ah
104Ah 1,198 Wh Rego Super Slim
200Ah 2,304 Wh Core Mini 200Ah, Core 200Ah, Pro 200Ah
240Ah 2,765 Wh Pro S1 240Ah
300Ah 3,456 Wh Core Mini 300Ah

Core and Core Mini: the space savers

The Core Mini is Renogy's compact line. Renogy calls the 100Ah its smallest 12.8V 100Ah battery, a Group 22NF size, and says the 200Ah is 21% smaller than comparable batteries and fits 8D and 4D battery boxes. Renogy lists the same case dimensions for the 200Ah and 300Ah Core Mini, so the 300Ah packs the most capacity into that footprint.

None of the Core Mini batteries has Bluetooth. Renogy's answer is to pair them with a Renogy Battery Shunt 300 or the 500A Battery Monitor with Shunt. The full-size Core 200Ah with Bluetooth has the app built in and is rated for 200A continuous charge as well as discharge.

All of these, and the Core Series 50Ah, have low-temperature protection. Renogy specifies charging from 32°F, so in a cold snap the battery will stop accepting a charge until it warms up. That is fine if the battery lives inside the heated part of the rig.

Pro and Pro S1: four-season batteries

The Pro 100Ah and 200Ah self-heat. Renogy says the heater runs when the battery is below 41°F (5°C) and stops above 50°F (10°C), and it needs a steady charge current to work: above 4A per battery for the 100Ah and above 6A for the 200Ah. Each battery has Bluetooth to the Renogy app and IP67 protection.

One limit to know before you buy: Renogy says the Pro batteries can only be connected in parallel, up to 8. If you plan a 24V or 48V system, the Pro is the wrong choice.

The Pro S1 240Ah is the high-output option. It is rated for 240A continuous and 450A peak for 30 seconds. Renogy says it can deliver over 3,000W of output, so it suits a large inverter. It self-heats, charges down to -4°F, has Bluetooth and CAN, is IP67, supports 4S4P wiring and carries a 7-year warranty.

Rego Super Slim: when the space is flat

The Rego 104Ah is 2.4 in thick and 22.8 x 11.4 in across. It suits a truck canopy, a space under a bed or a spot behind a seat. It uses semi-solid-state LiFePO4 cells, self-heats (on at 40°F / 5°C, off at 50°F / 10°C, 150W of heat), and is rated for 200A continuous discharge. Renogy says that is enough for a 2,000W inverter on one battery. It has Bluetooth and CAN, IP67, a rated life of 6,000 cycles and an 8-year warranty. One bracket kit comes in the box. Renogy's double, multiple and busbar brackets for multi-battery layouts are sold separately.

Matching a battery to an inverter

A 12V inverter pulls roughly its wattage divided by 12V from the battery, plus losses. A 2,000W inverter at full load needs about 2,000 ÷ 12 = 167A before losses, so you want a battery, or a bank, rated for 200A or more continuous. On a single battery, that rules out the Core Mini 100Ah, Pro 100Ah and Core 50Ah. Our inverter sizing guide covers the load side.

How to choose, in order

  1. Measure the space. If a full-size case won't fit, the decision is between the Core Mini and the Rego.
  2. Ask whether it will charge below freezing. If yes, choose a self-heating Pro, Pro S1 or Rego. See Can I charge a Renogy lithium battery below freezing?
  3. Check the system voltage. For 24V or 48V, skip the Pro and use a Core, Core Mini, Pro S1 or Rego wired in series.
  4. Size capacity from daily use, not from what fits, and match how you'll recharge it: solar (what a Renogy kit needs) or the alternator (DC-DC charger sizing). Our RV solar and battery calculator does it from the loads you run.

FAQ

Core Mini or Pro?

Space decides the Core Mini, winter decides the Pro. Our short answer, Renogy Core Mini or Pro Series, covers it in two minutes.

Can I mix Renogy battery models in one bank?

No. Renogy says batteries in a bank must be the same model and similar capacity, connected with cables of the same length and gauge.

Do I need a special charger for these?

You need one with a LiFePO4 setting. For the Pro's self-heating, Renogy recommends a charger whose continuous output is above 14V.

Which ones ship to Alaska or Hawaii?

None of our Renogy lithium batteries do. They ship free to the lower 48 states only.
